A story of sex and identity to make you gasp TV review James Jackson The film follows Jim, who was christened Kristi and raised as a female Next image › The Secret of Me Channel 4 ★★★★☆ The most remarkable moment of the documentary The Secret of Me came right at the end when a middle-aged man named Jim finally came face-to-face with Dr Carter, who had surgically made him a girl shortly after birth in 1976. Why? Because the baby’s phallus size “was nowhere near the size of a penis you’d expect on an infant” (so said the doctor). This was a well-intentioned decision, green-lit by the parents, but the fact that “Kristi”, as Jim was christened, then spent years as a very confused girl because the truth was kept secret from her (under medical advice) now looks little less than cruel. Yet the confrontation between Jim and Carter was notable for its tentative civility. The doctor, while explaining why the decision was taken in the baby’s best interests, admitted that “in retrospect it was wrong”. Jim’s intensely personal story, told directly into the camera, was the upshot of what happens when science all too readily accepts a single wonderful theory — one, as it would turn out, based on bogus research. In the 1960s the academic Dr John Money’s idea that an individual’s core gender identity is shaped in their early years, and isn’t something innate, essentially resulted in countless intersex babies undergoing these operations — ones described in this film as “genital mutilation”. Surgery at birth for babies with ambiguous genitalia isn’t banned in most countries (including the UK). Jim, now in his fifties and hirsutely male, clarified right at the start: “I know what you’re thinking — this is a transgender story. But it’s not.” He wasn’t born into the wrong body, but the right one. It was the doctors who decided he should be female.

Michael Woolf stands alongside fellow protesters, fiddling awkwardly with his backpack as faith leaders and other protesters chant slogans at a line of police officers. A moment later, one officer can be seen walking forward, grabbing Woolf by the wrist and yanking. Demonstrators attempted to hold on to Woolf, who was a clerical collar, but four officers wrenched him from the crowd and tossed him to the ground. After turning him onto his stomach, officers proceeded to arrest Woolf, and removed him to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office in Maywood, Illinois. “I’ve got bruises all over my body,” Woolf, an American Baptist minister who is pastor of Lake Street Church of Evanston, Illinois, told Religion News Service. He was speaking in his first interview since being released Friday afternoon after about seven hours in custody. Woolf said when he asked the arresting officers to loosen the plastic handcuffs that were causing his hands to go numb, an officer replied: “Nobody wants to talk to you — shut the f–k up.” “It’s part of the dehumanizing nature of it, and it’s it gives me a lot of clarity around what’s happening here,” said Woolf, who has been active in protests against ICE. “It’s really a spiritual emergency.”

I know there are some people out there who think I am supposed to end up in a room by myself with a gun and a bottle full of hate, a locked door and my slack mouth open like a disconnected phone. But I hate those people back from the core of my donkey soul and the hatred makes me strong and my survival is their failure, and my happiness would kill them so I shove joy like a knife into my own heart over and over and I force myself toward pleasure, and I love this November life where I run like a train deeper and deeper into the land of my enemies.
