Mental ill-health is often considered with a kind of suspicion by policy makers and governments. It's easy to isolate an imaginary set of malingerers that exist in cash-strapped budget holders head and then look for ways to include as many people as possible in that category with a few key presses

The last 25 years has seen a perpetual goldilocks dance in policy and perception around mental ill-health. Under diagnosis and lack of support is seen as a scandal until the costs of treating this seriously are manifest, then it's 'there's too much, there must be mistakes somewhere in counting'

Always amused (not amused) at how regularly the idea that there is a 'right' amount of mental ill-health in British society and that we must somehow return there. Declaring the correct amount of mental ill-health based on what you are prepared to pay to mitigate its effects isn't how reduction works

Seeing that Girl Guides are seeing an "exodus" of volunteers and supporters and even losing ambassadors after their decision to ban trans girls, and hey maybe your old pal Slurms might know what he's talking about sometimes eh
These are close knit circles and word *will* get around if their choice is a disaster, loads of volunteers leave and donations drop because they've capitulated. Then other organisations might think twice about following suit. Just saying.

This is disgusting. Absolutely disgusting. These people aren't criminals. They're refugees ffs.

I am finding it hard not to hope karma is rachetting up an enormous trebuchet to aim at the people pushing these inhumane rhetoric and policies.
Not to be overly obvious here, but many people seeking asylum need phones to keep in touch with loved ones, access crucial information etc. Having a phone isn't a "luxury item" anymore. It is a necessity for many people. Taking it away has serious implications.

It’s great that every “review” by this government is led by compliant shitheads so they can deliver the bigotry or cuts they want
A reminder that Wes Streeting and the Labour government have deliberately chosen two of the worst possible experts to lead the review into overdiagnosis by the way. People already entrenched in that belief who will absolutely manipulate findings to suit their ideological crusade.

This is actually one of the few times he's been honest and its cos the one thing that worries him is a breaking of the two party stranglehold and him losing status as a result.
(yes I know reform are bad i hate them too).
“If there is a Conservative government, I can sleep at night.” A right-wing populist Reform UK government, however, “is a different proposition”.

I'm sorry but having your party riddled with 1/3 transphobes is pathetic but at least that's them corralled there i guess.
🚨 BREAKING | Your Party has voted to enshrine trans rights into the party's founding policy documents.

Two motions, which both passed with a supermajority (with 10,000+ people voting) committed the new party to explicitly supporting "trans liberation".

disability benefits fraud is at 0.0something% and minuscule compared to the benefits unclaimed by ppl entitled to them but put off by stigma and an already cruel and humiliating system.
Balancing "no person with a disability should be denied accommodations" with "it's important to discourage non-disabled people from pretending to be disabled to take advantage of these accommodations" is really difficult and I don't have a great answer for what anyone should do about it.

These kinds of actions are never driven by a sense that things are overdiagnosed by the way, they're driven by a belief that mental health conditions either don't actually exist or that those that live with them deserve not only no support but also deserve the conditions they have.
This is basically going to be "Get off your phone and into work" isn't it?

hi min
✨Fertile Min✨

This #PhallusThursday we step away from ancient Rome (briefly) to visit ancient Egypt. Min was a god venerated since the 4th millennium BCE!

Usually Min is depicted as a male figure with an erect phallus and he holds a flail. In later Greek thinking, Min was associated with Pan.

Wes Streeting orders review of mental health diagnoses as benefit claims soar
Health secretary has asked experts to investigate whether normal feelings have become ‘over-pathologised’ The health secretary, Wes Streeting, has ordered a clinical review of the diagnosis of mental health conditions, according to reports. Streeting is understood to be concerned about a sharp rise in the number of people making sickness benefits claims because of diagnoses for mental illness, autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the Times reported. He has asked leading experts to investigate whether normal feelings have become “over-pathologised”, the newspaper said, as he seeks to grapple with the 4.4 million working-age people now claiming sickness or incapacity benefit. The figure has risen by 1.2 million since 2019, while the number of 16 to 34-year-olds off work with long-term sickness because of a mental health condition is said to have grown rapidly in the same period. Streeting told the Times he knew from “personal experience how devastating it can be for people who face poor mental health, have ADHD or autism and can’t get a diagnosis or the right support”. He added: “I also know, from speaking to clinicians, how the diagnosis of these conditions is sharply rising. “We must look at this through a strictly clinical lens to get an evidence-based understanding of what we know, what we don’t know, and what these patterns tell us about our mental health system, autism and ADHD services. “That’s the only way we can ensure everyone gets timely access to accurate diagnosis and effective support.” The review, which is expected to be launched on Thursday, is set to be led by Prof Peter Fonagy, a clinical psychologist at University College London specialising in child mental health, with Sir Simon Wessely, a former president of the Royal College of Psychiatry, acting as vice-chair. Considering Streeting's well stated belief autism, ADHD etc, along with mental health issues, are "overdiagnosed", I won't hold my breath for this doing anything other than being used to cut support, along with opportunities for diagnosis, for people who need it. #r4today
