This is the start of Thursday's daily🧵covering Ukraine's fight for its sovereignty + very existence

It's Day 1380 of the colonial war waged by Russia. Many are convinced we're close to a settlement, but how can you trust terrorists, particularly after breaking myriad promises?

Good morning on Day 1379 of the war in Europe.

The day after the 'crunch' Moscow talks and... nothing's changed. Ukraine wants peace. Russia refuses.

Strangely, still no post from Trump on Putin's latest humiliation of US 'power'

It's the daily thread - still never missed a day!

And, also, Ryan Lizza is clearly a piece of shit who should never work in journalism again after this either.

We're all agree on that, right?

In a surprise twist, the Canucks are pretty good with Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson on the ice and not so good when they're on the bench.

Spoke with Adam Foote about that today:

Canucks: Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson are everything to this team
Patrick Johnston: The Canucks' two-way game has a long way to go. They can score, but they need to learn to defend a whole lot better.

Btw about this from Lizza's reply: Olivia and I lived together for 4+ years (4 b'days, 4 Xmases, 4 anniversaries). That's like $1250 of jewelry per celebration. And her apartment was a writing studio. And I made an f-ton then. What was I supposed to do? Get her a lot of Gift Certificates from Kmart?

So Harvard is keeping this guy, but Claudine Gay had to step down over ginned up plagiarism accusations and bad-faith accusations of anti-Semitism.

Got it.

ryan is right. people HATE hearing this. but it is just a matter of simple incentives. if you want a more representative legislature — and if you want a legislature more resistant to corruption — then you need to jack up the salaries. serving as mayor of NYC should net you a cool 500K *at least*
people hate hearing this but it's 100% true, creating a huge pay gap between political leaders, their staffs, and other elites is a recipe for corruption. of course the flip side of that is taxes on the rich should be jacked way the hell up
The Mayor of New York only makes $260k. I bet there are police that make more than that in NY with overtime.

We need to pay elected leaders more money and stop pretending it's some sort of calling. They're managing hundreds of billions of dollars in investments and millions of people's lives.

Alberta is the wealthiest province in Confederation, but you'd never know that by looking at the way it funds its public schools and their students. At some point, voters might want to think about what that says — and means — @maxfawcett.bsky.social writes.
Alberta is the richest province in the country — except where it really counts
How does the province with the highest fiscal capacity in the country also have the lowest per-capita funding for students in its public schools? Because it wants it that way
