Both of my pop sci books changed significantly from outline to final draft as I delved deeper into sources and found information that put events and ideas in a different context.
It's the latter, but at a much larger scale than you may be thinking. You don't know what questions you can ask until you've spent a lot of time with the sources. But you also don't know which sources are going to be important going in. Archives are not organized in some obvious or transparent way.

My mentions tell me that this is already happening, but if I was a diehard Hawks fan, I would certainly be remembering the NAW missed layup in the first half and the missed technical FT in the second half.
(But I would also say that you need to focus on a lot more than that)

It’s funny: haven’t been to church in yrs, don’t know what to make of my relationship to religion, but somehow still know enough, & still identify enough as Christian, even if just culturally, to find this shit so deeply, personally, viscerally offensive to the teachings of the faith I grew up with
