Amen. So much for those purported NU values…
There are no terse excuses for moral cowardice, gullibility, and breach of fiduciary duty.

Disheartening to witness this capitation by my Alma mater. Profits over principles.
Have spoken/taught at Northwestern many times; have many good friends there; always been an admirer and fan. Multiple ties especially with Medill School. Will never forget commencement ceremony there, 19 years ago.

Not an admirer or fan of this.

Courage is contagious. So is capitulation.

Quality thread on a precious piece of Americana…
Spent a few hours today at the Hayward Toy Museum, getting a personal tour from the proprietor, Bruce, who pointed out all sorts of fascinating little details. If you're ever in or around Hayward with some time to kill, totally worth it.

So many runners left on base! Absolutely excruciating for this Tiger fan…
What a game! Despite heavy eyelids, I have watched every pitch of the ALDS from Seattle.

As a parent of young adults trying their best to cope in a difficult world, this advice hits home. Staying optimistic is hard but necessary.
I want our young people to know that there is a path forward, that a better world is possible. I don't want them to give up, to become cynical. They deserve to be young and full of optimism. They are owed a world that supports and sustains optimism.

Europe shows that where there’s a will, there’s a way
Currently in Helsinki and I am a traffic problem. I can’t get used to the idea that every single car will stop for a pedestrian so I stand there at a crosswalk while the (few) cars wonder why I am not yet crossing and I glance around nervously — now? It’s ok? Are we sure? (Sig alert Helsinki style)

I was humiliatingly forced to say prayers not of my faith in public school in the 60s until SCOTUS ruled it illegal and that's one reason I became a lawyer. There will always be prayers in school as long as there are math tests, but they should be personal and private, not required.

You might have heard of this company that wants to put giant reflectors in space to "light up" parts of the earth. It would be catastrophic not just for astronomers, but for...any people or creatures who thrive at night.
Have comments? The American Astronomical Society would love to hear from you.
Assessing Astronomical Impacts of Reflect Orbital’s Proposed Satellite System
This survey is being conducted by the American Astronomical Society (AAS) to gather input from astronomers, observatories, and night sky users worldwide regarding the potential impacts of Reflect Orbi...

Today I happened to be around for the opening ceremony of the Four Days of the Yzer, a 4-day long-distance walk through Belgian coastal towns organised by the Belgian Defence Force, in remembrance of the victims of the World Wars.

My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area.

(15 in Manhattan btw)
There is no possible justification for limiting e-bikes to 15mph but not cars.

Did anyone else assume that the finale would reveal Kleya to be Cassian’s long lost sister? I suppose that would have been too much like Luke and Leia…
(Oh, and: in S1E1, Cassian is looking for his missing sister. Did he ever find her, or what happened to her? Or did I miss that?)

Age verification? In high school chemistry we used slide rules instead of calculators. And our programming class was FORTRAN…on punch cards
Age verification? The first television show I watched was only in black and white.
Age verification? My student film was shot on 16 mm reversal stock and edited on a Moviola.

Reclaiming our urban centers from cars is possible if we are willing
Gran Vía, Madrid’s iconic central avenue, has long been the cultural and commercial heart of the city. But by the mid-2000s, it had become overwhelmed by private cars, and noise and air pollution that failed to meet EU standards; reflecting the car-centric urban planning paradigm in post-war Spain.🧵

His articles exploring the human causes of disasters from SS El Faro to Air France 447 to the shuttle Columbia were comprehensive, well researched, and impossible to put down. I was hoping he might have one more in the works. Missing him already…

I object on aesthetic and maybe quasi-moral grounds to language like “devout” and “deeply religious” in this context. If his fanaticism adhered to a different faith, he’d get “fanatic,” “extremist,” “zealot” etc. Perverting the Cross to commit murder exempts you from “devout”

Excellent point about the need for communities to think beyond the car when planning transportation infrastructure

Not our fault - an important message! But still a fact we must deal with.
I've heard colleagues say that the solution to what's happening to American science is for scientists to communicate the value of science better. That's false. Trump is doing a lot of unpopular things, including destroying the science enterprise. What's happening is not our fault. 1/2

A great thread explaining why supporting basic research is critically important
On Friday, my son stayed home from school because he had a sore throat and wasn’t feeling well. He went with my husband to his office for the morning while I handled our daughter. When he came back at lunch, he was not interested in eating, saying his throat hurt too much. 1/n

Thank you for funding the NSF grants that helped pay for my graduate research and subsidized undergraduate teaching labs at Berkeley
Tax Day next up: NSF!
🛰️ $40 a year. That’s what the average U.S. taxpayer pays annually to fund the National Science Foundation.

💡 Science isn’t luxury - it’s infrastructure.
From disaster prediction to cybersecurity to the tech in your phone, NSF powers the systems that keep society running.
