It's been true since Henry Wallace was VP and reaffirmed in 1972. The real left is an existential threat to the Dems, so they would rather hand power over to fascists because they know that the swinging pendulum of the duopoly means that they'll get to fundraise and return to power, no matter what.
A lot of Democrats hate leftists more than they hate fascists.
