There's a running joke among ex-LJ employees: "given enough venture capital, all sites will reimplement LiveJournal circa 2004", and part of the reason Bluesky feels so much like home is it reminds me incredibly much of the vibe from those days!

When I interviewed Spinal Tap and Marty DiBergi this summer, none of them broke character, for the whole hour. Except Rob Reiner, once, losing it when Michael McKean's David St Hubbins talked about minimalism. I didn't use this in the feature and hadn't published any audio, but this is joyful.

While digging through my Game Boy carts last night I found what might be my favorite bootleg find. The title and label really capture what I love about unofficial releases.

I played Horses this weekend and I wrote down some messy thoughts not only on the game but especially on the specter of formalism that emerged to haunt us all for a moment.

I thought this was going to be a review of my time with Santa Ragione's Horses, the controversial art game recently banned from Steam and the Epic Store. To some extent, this will be that but after...

As the last 4 years have shown, there are few things more dangerous than a technology which does not exist but is being sold on the premise that it does. Imagine how dangerous it would be to have a machine that people believe reads thoughts but does not. Imagine what law enforcement would do with it

After the recent joy of Hard Boiled in a packed theater it hit me that one of the tragedies of capitalism’s manifestation of our tech age is that on top of imprisoning us in gilded cages disconnected from shared reality, they are transforming communal experience into an expensive, uncommon novelty.
James Gunn says theatrical releases are “incredibly important” for DC after the Warner Bros & Netflix merger news

“The communal theatrical experience is something that is incredibly important & remarkably well suited to our big spectacle films”

Damn, one thing I can say about growing up during the era of over-inflated fears about MK and Night Trap is at least the kids didn’t side with the game cops.
i am going completely insane watching gamers make up shit about horses and interrogating every single thing the devs have said for inconsistencies and then deciding well it probably had cp in it. this is the easy mode version of the kinds of censorship that are to come and you're failing like babies

This is why I hate whenever people lump smart home shit in with AI. You can make the Breakfast Machine from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure in your house run totally locally and securely entirely from parts sourced from AliExpress and GitHub repos.
❌ Smart home stuff sucks why do you need to make a toaster have Bluetooth who asked for this
✅ someone on GitHub found a way to make your rice machine send you push notifications to tell you it’s done inferred entirely by how much power it’s consuming
