Another good article from French explaining that lawmakers and courts have illogically reasoned that to keep good and well-meaning people motivated and willing to participate in public service, they must be less accountable to the public and to the law.

We let a majority of US voters off the hook way too easily. Yes Trump miscalculated. For it to matter, a majority of voters had to miscalculate more biggly
I get the practice of using something like "The US" as a synecdoche to mean just generally the government but I think the subject in question is so aberrant that its worth being very specific on. Its Trump. This is entirely Trump. This is how much of a singular rupture he is.

What makes this statement by Emmanuel Macron so unprecedented is, for the first time, a leading European ally is equating Trump with Putin.

“No intimidation or threat will influence us - neither in Ukraine, nor in Greenland, nor anywhere else in the world.”

EVERYTHING has changed.

I’ve been stalwart backer of transatlantic alliance all my life. I understand why Europeans have so far trod softly/tried to keep Trump onside. But, there comes a time when you have to face reality. The US is no longer our ally. Its defense guarantee is worthless. Time to kick ass back🧵

If they were really worried about Russia taking over Greenland we wouldn't be so busily abandoning Ukraine...which has sunk so much of Russia's Black Sea Fleet that they've had to expand operations to the Mediterranean and Caspian seas just to find worthwhile targets.

Fraud is a serious crime that merits laying siege to an entire city and collectively punishing every immigrant from Somalia.

It's also a crime for which you can be pardoned and relieved of compensating your victims, so long as some of the money you stole finds its way to the president.

I would like to think the Mad King proclaiming “I will continue to illegally raise taxes on the American people until the NATO alliance collapses” would be the type of statement to cause Congress to act, but I’m not sure there’s any red line the GOP Congress has anymore.
Trump says he'll impose a 10% tariff (rising to 25% in June) on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland, because they've sent people to Greenland, until the US can buy Greenland.

I was an international conference with university leaders in Korea last year. Everyone at my table had studied in the US, and associated it with democratic values.
This was how soft power worked, but it only worked when the American actions broadly (and even imperfectly) aligned with the values.
Simon Kuper in today’s FT on the bamboozled blue-suited governing elite: “Some tribe members did stints at US universities … and fell for a country that’s now outside their circle of trust.”

Obviously Denmark is part of a broader military coalition pledged to defend them in case of attack. I would have thought a guy who sold his house to go live on a military base because he was scared of his neighbors would get this.

Guess what, they never cared about individual rights or had a problem with state violence. It just depends on who's on the receiving end.
