35 years ago, Soviet forces killed 14 civilians and injured hundreds of peaceful protesters in Vilnius, Lithuania.

The events in Vilnius, as well as in Baku and Tbilisi, show that the collapse of the Soviet Union was not without bloodshed; the claim of a “peaceful dissolution” is disinformation.

Much higher than the estimate death toll in the 2022 protests, and probably the bloodiest crackdown in the Islamic Republic's history, if you exclude the murder of political prisoners in jails in the 1980s.
"About 2,000 people including security personnel have been killed in protests in Iran, an Iranian official said on Tuesday, the first time authorities have acknowledged the high death toll from an intense crackdown on two weeks of nationwide unrest" www.reuters.com/world/china/...

Yeah, this sounds weird. I thought military planning is all about having more than Plan A, and ideally not just Plan B and Plan C, but also Plan D, E and F.

Plus, it’s not like everything gets duplicated, either.

In 2026, after the past 12 months, centering one’s own plans around NATO seems naive.
I don’t know. I’ve never been one of the people massively concerned about “duplicate structures”, but especially these days that doesn’t strike me as something we need to work hard to avoid…

Because in a post-American world Germany depends on France's nukes, Italian naval assets in the Med and Polish and Ukrainian armies as the first line in the East I suspect Berlin's EU partners will adapt to a strong Bundeswehr.

Not so sure about Brits and Americans though

"Far from contextualising the monument, in 2026, Vienna residents will be forced to witness the grotesque spectacle of a social democratic city government returning a monument honouring a political antisemite to its former glory."
The longer this saga around the Lueger-Denkmal dragged on, the more I came to realise just how stupid the idea of artistically contextualising it by tilting it 3.5 degrees to the right was. Sadly, no one listened to me.
Tower Of Fools
The City of Vienna is to go ahead with plans to artistically contextualize the city's monument to its former mayor Karl Lueger by tipping it 3.5° to the right

Few individuals have had such a colossal & deleterious impact on the cultural psyche as the recently-departed Erich von Däniken. While he was not alone in fusing aliens into our conception of the distant human past, he was perhaps the most successful & the most harmful in doing so.

The risk now is that Trump will sell out the Iranian protesters for a financial deal. He said last night Tehran had reached out for talks and today Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said lines to Trump envoy Steve Witkoff were open. Witkoff has already done his best to sell out Ukraine for a cash deal

I know it's hard to shock these days but Elon Musk going full Rhodesia defender and calling for the ethnic cleansing of the US should still shock you.

These are neo nazi views that were only previously shared on explicitly neo nazi sites.

there's a lesson to be learned here. Authoritarian leaders can't be prevented from taking power by saying what they will do in office: Either the majority doesn't believe you or it simply doesn't care.
Kamala Harris at her closing campaign rally:

"Donald Trump intends to use the United States Military against American citizens who simply disagree with him."

A core part of modern far-left political beliefs in the West, really just is an unconditional and servile worship of the most horrific regimes in the world. Assad? Khamenei? Yeah, sure! As long as you claim to be "anti-West" you are good, apparently. Disgusting.

Whoever is killing the protestors in Teheran tonight is shouting in Arabic as they are doing so. Probably members of Shia death squads and terror groups, flown in from Iraq, Lebanon, or Yemen.

It goes both ways. The army knows that if they defect and change sides, people will accept most of them. On the other hand, the people will relentlessly hunt down every single person in the IRGC at their homes, even the lower ranks.
There might be some in the army who would consider defecting. But no one in the IRGC.
