What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

👀... Except that the cat has dealt with all carelessly placed bits of ceramic
Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

So often you see some dingy, overpriced, dirty-looking house advertised to rent, with "SORRY NO PETS" firmly stipulated in the details. Get a grip. My pets have got a lot of self-respect and wouldn't want to live in your shit house.

Question: "If chimps are so much like us, why are they endangered while humans dominate the globe?"

Goodall: "Well, in some ways we're not successful at all. We're destroying our home. That's not a bit successful."

[Context: South Africa]
I live near Groote Schuur hospital (major tertiary centre) and I've never before or since seen so many life flight helicopters land there.
My apartment’s main windows faced the street that ambulances took to get to the nearest hospital. It was *nonstop* swirling red lights and sirens for months. I didn’t realize how literally traumatized I was until sometime in 2021 when an ambulance drove by and I had a full body response to it.
remember during the worst of 2020 when the sirens were going nonstop and the empire state building pulsed an ominous red every single night
