NE Ohio

Let’s talk sports, finance, and science nerdery
I have this theory (I'm a little biased) that Ohio has always been the moral compass of the nation; Oberlin, Hudson, John Brown, and the Western Reserve generally at forefront of abolitionism / equal rights, Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, Garfield, Hayes, Harrison, McKinley, Carl Stokes, Kent State etc.
This is a really well done—I hope it catches on: A silent roadside protest staged over the weekend in Westerville, Ohio, and posted to the Facebook page of the Westerville Progressive Alliance.

"Nothing can be settled which is not right"

- Charles Sumner

Since things have never been perfect, there have always been soldiers fighting a long war, losing & losing & losing - maybe for generations - until one day they aren't losing anymore. That's how progress is made on moral projects.
i love this part and i think it very much shows the difference in depth of thinking between someone like Klein, desperately fighting in the here-and-now and arguing to win a battle with compromise, versus Coates' position that he is a soldier in a long war.

This chart the same summer that Tom Hamilton goes into the hall of fame ... sometimes seems like the only good thing going on in the world. Thank you, baseball.

I bought a very lightly used Bolt EUV that’s pretty loaded (heated and cooled seats, panoramic moonroof, digital rear view mirror, Super Cruise, heated steering wheel, wireless CarPlay etc) for $21k and I don’t really think you could get a low mileage and similarly equipped gas car for that.

Stagflation is imminent. I repeat, stagflation is imminent. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

While everyone (fairly) talks about free speech today, in other news, Nvidia has now been presumably pressured to financially support Intel following the government taking a stake in the company.

We are rapidly normalizing moves towards state capitalism.

So I've been reading this book by Michael Luo

Couple things
1) This is dark
2) What a timely book
3) 'Economic Anxiety' has a very long history
4) Uniting people across ethnicities into shared labor unions might be the most difficult yet worthwhile of undertakings

When you live under a dictator, your institutions mourn what he mourns, and ignore what he ignores.

Everything that’s happening in this regard is a mirror to the state of our democracy.
The night after the murder of Melissa Hortman, the Democratic legislator in Minnesota, the Yankees were at the Red Sox and neither team requested a moment of silence.

For an actual public servant.

Who we choose to hold a moment of silence for and who we do not are silences that speak volumes.

You will know the robotics movement is serious when they are all quadrupeds.

Bipedalism is stupid. Making biped robots is stupid.
Someone crossed a Whippet with a Belgian Malinois and the dog can run almost 40 MPH. Something incredibly soothing about this pup’s gait at that speed. Add in the wind turbine-peppered sunset and man…

Just finished @carlzimmer.com ‘s book ‘Air-Borne’ and would recommend it enthusiastically. A terrific book that documents an incredible history of the scientific thought regarding what’s in the air we breathe. Thank goodness for those working so hard to help us better understand the world around us.

Went to an Underground Railroad museum today in the small town of Flushing, Ohio. Had never really thought about slave auctions taking place just across the Ohio River in Wheeling before. But they did.

On the way home, stopped at Salt Fork State Park for a short hike. Made some four-legged friends

I've started listening to the New York Times podcast 'Day X' which was posted back in 2021. If you listen to it, you can't help but see the current situation in the United States staring back at you. It's a lil terrifying tbh

Listened to Neil Young sing 'Ohio' live last Friday and worried we were approaching a repeat. Bad feeling right in the chest. Feels real bad, man.
what donald trump wants more than anything is video of american soldiers gunning down american citizens
This could end up very badly given what we know of Rules on Use of Force (RUF) for Guard in DC. And very different training regimens compared to local police.

Wall Street Journal reporting:

"National Guard troops deployed to Washington, D.C. are preparing to carry weapons in the coming days."

The CDC shooting didn’t even really register in the news and the details are absolutely insane
First the terrorist tried to enter campus in a car filled with guns. When he wasn’t allowed past the gates, he started firing from a CVS drugstore across the street. From a semi-automatic weapon, 500 shots is a lot. He was at it for a long time.

Here are the weapons & shell casings he left behind.

Exactly - and that’s why a central organizing principle of Trump 2.0 is the dismantling of civil service reform efforts that are 150 years old.
That’s how you buy loyalty: by giving jobs to people who would most likely never have gotten them under normal circumstances. They will do anything to hold on to that job including breaking laws they barely grasp. Resource dependence theory (Pfeffer & Salancik) led to the “golden handcuff” theory.

Here’s something you notice at every car event in NE Ohio; approximately nobody under ~55 cares to own, restore, or tinker with classic cars. Those that care largely can’t afford it as a hobby. Minty nice classic cars in the estates of dying boomers are going to be cheap af.
Classic car restoration requires maniacally devoted artisans. But a disappearing labor force is creating years-long wait lists.
So You Bought a Fancy Vintage Car. Now Who’s Going to Restore it?
The restoration industry faces years-long waiting lists and a disappearing labor force.

Austin Hays was on the USS Alabama with Bob Feller
Austin Hays is the most 1950s-looking player in baseball. Looks like his nickname should be “tugboat” and he should be sponsored by a cigarette company
