Worth watching 'Good Night, and Good Luck,' in any of its versions, as a reminder of what CBS has been.

Or 'The Insider,' about 60 Minutes in particular.

This is really, really bad.

@bencollins.bsky.social The Onion ("America's Finest News Source" - trademark) stays in business by offering festive holiday discounts on subscriptions to old-timey ink-on-paper editions of The Onion delivered directly to grateful subscribers by the equally-old-timey United States Postal Service.
How in hell does The Onion stay in business?

There’s room for somebody on the left to wrap themselves in the flag a little & make a point that the right’s rejection of America as a creedal nation—and their ad hoc, ahistorical effort to make it an ethnonationalist project instead—is distinctly *unamerican,* a rejection of the national project.
If immigrating from England makes you a "heritage American" then I guess I'm one too.

my favorite thing about the benoit blanc movies is that they aren't really about benoit blanc. he is not grappling with demons from his past. we are not getting flashbacks to the husband whose murder he never solved. he just shows up and does his job like mary poppins for homicides

This is why Pynchon has so much fun with detective novels.
this is a difference you see between more "traditional" detective stories (holmes, poirot etc), where the dapper detective is more removed from the action itself, and noir and hardboiled detective fiction, where the troubled, traumatized, alcoholic detective shapes and is shaped by the plot

Watching 2001 at a sold out theater at @musicboxtheatre.bsky.social, discovering how HAL is straight up pure comedy.

It’s a Wonderful Life at the Music Box as well.

Watching my kids dance in the aisles of The Oriental Theater at a showing of Stop Making Sense.
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.
