"Slop" is “such an illustrative word,” said Greg Barlow, Merriam-Webster’s president, told the AP ahead of Monday’s announcement. “It’s part of a transformative technology, AI, and it’s something that people have found fascinating, annoying and a little bit ridiculous.” https://to.pbs.org/4oTxgas
Merriam-Webster's word of the year for 2025 is AI 'slop'
"Slop" was first used in the 1700s to mean soft mud, but it evolved more generally to mean something of little value.

i am eager for the AI hype cycle and bubble to burst so that we can hopefully move on to a more sustainable and practical ecosystem of AI that isn’t dominated by power hungry grifters, villains, and idiots

the technology is good, local/open models exist, privacy/accuracy are possible

One other thing I've noticed is that you're suddenly against all technology if you're critical of GenAI.

No dude, I like robots, VR, and digital watches. And I can see the benefits of assistive AI/LLMs for stuff like medical research and data processing and pre-existing automation QoL stuff.

I feel that our acceptance of the term "AI" to refer to this technology has aided those who want to jam this bullshit hallucination theft technology into every crevasse of our lives. It's the exact opposite of "intelligence".
New: When the Washington Post ran tests on its AI personalized podcasts, the paper found that between 68% and 84% (!!) of the pods had potential issues.

Still, the paper decided to release the product anyway, saying it would “iterate through the remaining issues”

In "fairness" some people reportedly find lots of AI stuff extremely "profound" - and I even believe some of them. It's just that then they show you the "profound" AI Work in question and wind up telling you much more about themselves than about the technology, none of it good.

Competency in AI?

Why do we need to become “competent in” a technology that is literally signed to make it unnecessary for us to BE competent… ?

How can tech minister Liz Kendall claim there is “no clear consensus”? What on earth would consensus look like if not this?

Government should rule out an AI copyright exception immediately.

NEW: President Trump signed an executive order that threatens to withhold funding from states with AI regulations that work to ensure the technology is safe, trustworthy, and nondiscriminatory.

This doubles down on a harmful policy that the Republican-led Congress rejected twice already.

I just remembered that GenAI audio summaries is how Canada's AI minister Evan Solomon gets his news.

It's hard not to be ranty about this stuff when the people at the top are wilfully blind to flaws with this technology that the rest of us can see so clearly.

AI people think that creation is all about suffering for us deluded, self-flagellating luddites, pounding away at a fucking stone tablet or whatever, refusing to embrace technology because we don't think that "write me a character" constitutes art or anything someone should be proud of.

It's interesting that Amazon never once mentions the word "AI" in this post (even though it is clearly using AI technology, with the poor ✨ icon visible in the accompanying picture). It's like they know people hate this tech or something

These laws are flawed. It's not just VPNs. In the UK, people are using fake IDs and AI video to get around them — they're full of holes that can be exploited. The technology is new and inexact and the internet is global.
