it's just the set of more or less negative preconditions that make it possible to experiment with something beyond history. Without history the experimentation would remain indeterminate, lacking any initial conditions, but experimentation isn't historical.

its all the experimentation with failure and punishment but moreso, the normal carts give you 18 lives, the tower of ascension carts are easier but make you do it all in one go, the glitch carts are way harder but you have infinite lives, they all feel so different just from this 1 variable
