Chelicerata (="claw horn" The first official use of “Chelicerata” can be traced back to 1901 when Richard Heymons formally published the name. Its meaning is related to the chelicerae, looking most of the time like hard small claws at the front, kinda as a horn. This feature was used to define the group, which at first only contained arachnids & horseshoe crabs. The outlines of what is a chelicerate weren’t always clear: depending on the decade and author, the word “Chelicerata” sometimes meant the same thing as the group we call today “Euchelicerata”. In this configuration, and to include pycnogonids, the word “Cheliceriformes” was used, and meant the same things as our current definition of “Chelicerata”. First, let's see the etymology of 4 of the most important big groups of chelicerates.

PYCNOGONIDA (=thick knee) Colloquially called sea spiders, “Pycnogonida” are one of these groups which names derive from the first member named, in this case Pycnogonum, a widespread current genus with thick leg joints. Pierre André Latreille linked other species to Pycnogonum, and named the group in the year 1810. Then, little by little, the concept extended beyond this base. Another name frequently used for this group is “Pantopoda” (=”all legs”), and for a time both names were used as synonyms. Currently, Pycnogonida serves to describe the entire group, which can date back all the way to the Cambrian, and Pantopoda is used only for the modern species sub-group. The slide also include a screenshot of the first description of the group which is surprisingly not that much outdated compared to other chelicerates groups Xiphosura (="sword tail/body end) The name “Xiphosura” was first coined by Pierre André Latreille in 1802. At that time, they were considered crustaceans close to Triops due to their general aspect. The name Xiphosura was in reference to the long modified telson of horseshoe crabs, almost looking like a sword. Apart from that, the first definition of Xiphosura (having a beak and no gills) is totally outdated. What is a xiphosuran has been a bit of a mess through history, the name having been used in both cladistic and non-cladistic contexts. It’s kinda funny to see that the original meaning of the name, despite having nothing to do with the original description, ended up being quite well chosen since all members of Xiphosura have a telson modified into a pointy sword-like tail. The slide also include the first super outdated description of what a xiphosuran is Eurypterida (="wide fin/wing) Interestingly, “Eurypterida” shares a naming origin story a bit similar with Pycnogonida, the name of the whole group coming from its first described genus in 1825, Eurypterus. This name was chosen in reference to the noticeable large last pair of legs, looking like fins. Gradually from this starting point, the family Eurypteridae was created, and then the order Eurypterida as we know it today took shape during the XX° century. This history created some oddities, like the fact that not all eurypterids have enlarged last legs (the order is characterized mainly by ventral morphology, their eyes & general tagmosis), and ironically today the family Eurypteridae only contains the genus Eurypterus. Other names like Gigantostraca or Cyrtoctenida have been used for this group too. Arachnida (="spider") Like its name implies, “Arachnida” is derived from the ancient Greek word for spider, as spiders are our most commmon exposure to arachnids and exhibit a clear & simplified exemple of the arachnid body plan (Body in 2 main parts, 8 walking legs, aerial respiration, etc). The paternity of the name is accorded to Jean-Baptiste Lamarck all the way back to 1801, 225 years ago. What is an arachnid could take hours to talk about. The first definitions included pycnogonids, centipedes and some crustaceans, and in other writings scorpions were considered as true bugs. Now, thanks to major advances, it appears the “terrestrial chelicerates group” we got used to isn’t that black & white and is the result of several convergent terrestrialization events.
