Sleek black and white buffleheads are some of the most elegant waterbirds at Mavericks. We often get photos of the males, with their fluffy white headdresses atop their black heads. But it is more difficult to photograph the birds who hastily dive when they glimpse the camera lenses aimed at them. This photograph captures a moment when the bufflehead has arched its neck to submerge its beak in the water, after which it will launch the rest of its body into the ocean. We see the white stripe of the top of its head and the white shirtfront that usually rides on top of the water. Some of the bird is reflected in the gently rippling water.

It was so party today, and Bub and I headed back to Deer Lagoon trail.
Lots more to see since foliage is shrinking and the contrasting waterways
really were alive with waterfowl sounds!
A small red cockapoo on one of the dikes at Deer Lagoon, Whidbey island. This crowd were Buffleheads, scoters and a few Hooded Mergansers. Certain small plants such as wild rose and holly are marked for protection. A wild rose bush is marked to save from trimming.

In reflecting on the past year, I realize one of the things that has consistently brought me peace and joy is the #birds and #BirdOfTheDay content on Bluesky. #reflections

mine is a minolta 70-210mm f/4, so i definitely understand the reach issue. i can generally get good shots of birds that aren't timid, but skittish ones like buffleheads or turkeys are damn near impossible.
