This was a fascinating discussion that went in unexpected directions. I did not anticipate learning how the LARP and BDSM communities share safety tools.
All this meant the episode went long, and I had to cut some interesting stuff. The unedited version on Patreon is 40 minutes longer.

I wrote a workshop for a larp I'm running in November with assistance from a friend and I'm so, so pleased. I love boundary and safety workshops that emphasize agency, curiosity, and kindness.

I just reread my #larp submission for blackbox cph 26. When asked about safety tools, past me wrote:
This is a story about breaking free. It is an act of rebellion. The path to safety is to play the larp.

It feels to me like Trump and RFK Jr. are trying to LARP being the heroes of a second thalidomide crisis.
(While at the same time having dismantled many of the safety mechanisms once in place at the FDA to potentially stop something like the thalidomide crisis from re-occuring.)

There's an entire category of larp that could be described as "Surprise, you're Hitler!" You think it's Scooby Doo but it's Cthulhu. Personally I dislike this intensely, since play is a commitment and I really want to know (for both pleasure and safety) what I'm committing to.

Concord Olympus was such a magical event for me. It was all the things I love about the Secrets and Powers larp style, without the toxic issues of old Vamp larp.
Part of this is the focus on player safety and calibration, and part was the amazing players cast in all of the roles.

Hard Science involve players synchronising their brainwaves with an alien, merging with their consciousness and memory; the player is then interviewed by the rest of their team to uncover information.
Since this is a tech-heavy larp, I wonder if there is any audio/VR for the "merging"...

Wish ppl'd stop calling deceptive ppl doing horrible things #larpers. Ppl who #larp are aware that they're playing #games for #fun. There are physical & emotional #safetymechanics in modern larps ffs. They won't work on non-larpers causing real-world harm bc those ppl aren't larpers.

Also, this was the very first time I used safety mechanics for myself at this larp. And I immediately get shit for it. I hate (some) larp veterans so much.

The problem with larp safety (and larp design in general) is that a lot of it is telling people what to do (or not do), as opposed to figuring out how they do things.

Also, let's have an earnest discussion here if y'all are up for it:
What is a sex or intimacy mechanic that you find really fucking cool? You can talk about any kind of game here.
I for one recently learned about a "find the safety pin" sex mechanic in LARP and it galaxy brained me.

I bring this up every time people evangelize ChatGPT. When I helped run a larp with full-contact foam weapon fighting, we had a player try to make gear safety rules calls using only ChatGPT instead of the actual rules, and it got a LOT critically wrong. That gear wouldn't have passed a safety check.

Hell, kink culture too; most larp safety tools are directly descended from ones that originate in kink

Nothing like trying to push through writing for a larp playtest during the first two weeks of an administration that is constantly threatening my loved ones jobs and safety.
Whoops on that timing there....

I'm fascinated at how safety systems for larp and ttrpgs are being built on the twin foundations of industrial safety and bdsm.
It's a good reminder that wisdom can be found everywhere, and we should always be stealing systems that already have real world testing.

A lot of people don't understand how combat centric our LARP is and want to bring kids out. We have an age range for a reason, we don't like hitting kids. I'm not saying this to sound like a wiener either, we're not trying to hurt each other or anything, but safety comes first.

None of that is happening, and lying about it is not only obnoxiously cruel to the victims of a terrorist attack, but also endangers the lives of Palestinians by panicking them into staying in a war zone instead of evacuating to safety. Your LARP costs lives.

thinking about tracking the different roles that formalized safety mechanics have assumed in ttrpg & larp culture since, oh, Sex and Sorcerer. the ebb and flow of "this is a mechanic for a specific game at a specific table" and "this is a mechanic present throughout the scene"

I know a lot of safety mechanics work through a circle of exploration. TTRPG, LARP, kink and social work (like therapy) all work off each others ideas, create and iterate. So I was really hoping for engaging conversation when I was finally surrounded by LARP.

Guests attending this year's Halloween Horror Nights will be able to purchase a "Deathly Afraid" necklace, which informs the park's actors that they don't want to be scared.
While this has sparked a lot of debate in haunt circles, it's also got me thinking about TTRPG and LARP safety tools.

The X-Card was created because Dave didn’t like the vibe
James Mendez Hodes was there when the deep magic was written.
