I've had a long fiction reading rut, was only reading nonfiction last few years, that finally broke with Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. Think portal fantasy by way of C.S. Lewis Narnia with a dash of Borges/Plato.

Just about anything by Seanan McGuire (mostly urban fantasy and portal fantasy) or her alter egos Mira Grant (SF/horror) and A. Deborah Baker (children's portal fantasy). My personal favorite of hers is the Newsflesh series, although the InCryptid series is a very close second.

Mary leans forward, the bunny ears on her hoodie bobbing behind her, "i see two figures!" she says. 2 of 4 Aestre and Deirdre emerge from the portal. Deirdre holds an unconscious Aestre who is looking even more punked than before. "we're almost through, Aestre!" Deirdre yells, "Hold on!" 3 of 4 Deirdre, very surprised to see her estranged husband yells, "THOMAS!! What are you doing here‽" "Nevermind, what's wrong with Aestre?" he sayshands outstretched to help. 4 of 4 "She started fading and needed to leave, but i fear the portal may have made things worse" Deirdre explains. "'s a good thing i came prepared" replies Thomas. in this panel, Mary stares in wonder. her whole life and faith in magick and the Fae confirmed in a single name, "Aestre?" she manages to say. alt-textra: in the story "i shall go into a Hare" Mary makes it very clear her beliefs to Addie and together they form what they call The Bunny Coven. Mary has spent years being ridiculed for her quirks and fascination with cultic practices and rituals. so for her to finally see the being she has worshipped as a goddess in the flesh and at the moment so vulnerable, would be a great shock to her, but also a relief and affirmation that maybe she wasn't as crazy as everyone said. still crazy, just not as crazy.

1 of 4 new chapter, new page! this chapter is titled, "...and the Deepsleep Sea". this panel shows Randy the twelve foot Fresh Garbage Spirit performing a magic spell while muttering incantations to open a portal back the Ever-Changing Brambles. in his arms the Bean Sidhe, She Who Until Recently Combed Her Hair, struggles to escape. 2 of 4 Deirdre sides up to Aestre and declares on no uncertain terms, "i'm Going with you". "but Deirdre," says Aestre, "Zöe has not come back, yet!" 3 of 4 "don't argue!" says an undeterred Deirdre. "My children are more self-reliant than i could have ever guessed. and you are too weak to go alone!" Deirdre is of course correct as Aestre accepts this fact dejectedly. 4 of 4 "i'm not afraid for myself, but for others i worry" Aestre says, which is pretty much my own anxiety in a nut-shell. "and i'm one of those worrisome "others"- let's go!" Deirdre commands. she takes Aestre's hand and walks into the newly opened portal... alt-textra: new chapter and all that good stuff! i got a doozy of an ending in store for this one with lotsa good lil twists if'n i may brag so for a second. i really like how Deirdre's stubbornness came out in this page. ten years in a cave she's really not taking anyone's crap anymore.

the prompt list for Fantasy Indies November. today's prompt is "Saturday Snippet" The Gate. Like every Gate, it was a fifteen-foot circle of lily-white stone wrapped in geometric silver filigree, standing on its edge and kept there by two giant stone support beams. The portal was flanked by two uniformed attendants, and translucent blue light shimmered in its empty middle. Selba had never seen a real Gate before — only the illustrations in the dispatches. This one hadn’t even been constructed the last time she was here. Even so, she knew the light was magic. An echo of some transport mage’s willpower, permanent yet malleable, and maintained by a mix of spellwork and manual augmentation that was decidedly too complex for the layperson to fully grasp.
