Great but we’re here ‘cause Jim Crow was ✅ in MN. 100 years ago the Klan paraded thru Minneapolis & Jack Trice, the 1st Black student on Iowa State’s football team died from the game w UMn. Also, by the 1930’s, Black founders of Edina, MN were runout by racist covenants.

Minnesotans fucking rock. I did grad school at UMN. I remember my years there fondly and even married a Minnesotan by the end. 😊 These are some of the toughest people and best neighbors and friends. So many of us are standing with MN from afar. I’m so proud of their resistance.
From a friend in Minneapolis, just now:

Bravo to all the UMN students, staff, faculty, and others protesting #ICE today! Wish I could be with you. Stay safe and warm.

When I was in a RWJF grant program based out of UMN, I got to learn from some interfaith community organizers there who were doing things to support immigrants. There's a great foundation for this work there that has been building for years now, so in many ways ICE picked the wrong place.
MINNESOTA SHUTDOWN: Clergy have blocked the road in front of Terminal 1 at MSP while a crowd of thousands sings "before this campaign fails, we'll all go down to jail, everybody has a right to live." Photos are members of UNITE HERE 17 who've been abducted. I'll be updating here throughout the day.

The weather gave places like UMN a way to observe the strike without endorsing it.

I had the good fortune of being introduced to Noether's Theorem by Professor Ben Bayman at UMN. Some may know what an outstanding lecturer he is.

I was just beginning to put the pieces from various courses together coherently, and solve problems more generally. For me it was the key to the rest.

I remember biking across the twin cities in -20 temperatures to go in when I still worked at the University. I don't remember UMN cancelling anything for cold while I was there.

(I was a grad student, so, who knows. They may have and it didn't affect what I had to be there for. But.)

Yess! UMN just closed campus tomorrow 1/23 for "extreme cold weather." This effectively grants the Graduate Labor Union's demand to shut down for the Day of Action umnglu.org/jan23/

To put a point on how rare this is, the UMN closed for precisely one half day in the time I was there, and for an ice storm that was particularly difficult.

The wind chill is not something to play around with. Reports indicate it may hit -50 F / -45 C.

Furthermore, Minnesota is Canada.
listen friends ... I like the general strike on friday the 23rd, but if you don't see big crowds protesting in the streets. Well. The U is likely to close for cold, that's how cold it's gonna be.

in my three years at umn we have never had rehearsal in the first week of classes because that’s when they do auditions, and today, our director emailed us TWENTY MINUTES BEFORE REHEARSAL saying that there was in fact rehearsal today. bro. that should have gone out at 8 am.

None of us wants ICE here endangering the people of Minnesota. But you aren't helping when AAUP officers write UMN administrators asking that tenured colleagues who disagree with them be fired or transferred to other units. Don't use authoritarian tactics and say you oppose authoritarians.
January 22, 2026 at 4:31 AM
UMN admin messaging is basically “we support the right to protest but you shouldn’t”
