October 5: Apologies for the bad news, but today is one of the 3 unluckiest days of the year in the Roman calendar. Definitely let people know that the underworld opens up to the living today (mundus patet) and so you just can’t leave your house, especially to sail (also on August 24 & November 8).
The tomb was designated the “Tomb of Cerberus” after the incredible mural of Hercules fighting the three-headed dog that guarded the underworld.

Not necessarily agreed, however it would be a wise political move for Democrats to negotiate a return to tax-free status in exchange for more reasonable caps on tuition & other steps to make college education more accessible & affordable rather than remaining a lifetime debt trap.

Dartmouth says No to Trump. Go Green! 🌳💚
jeffsharlet.bsky.social
It appears that my employer, Dartmouth, one of the Trump 9, has said no to the compact. All the better given that our president is cited within it. But she’s saying no. Count the small victories when they come.
Office of the President
Dear Dartmouth community,

As many of you know, Dartmouth was one of nine universities asked by the White House to give feedback by Oct. 20 on a draft of its “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.”

I am deeply committed to Dartmouth’s academic mission and values and will always defend our fierce independence.

You have often heard me say that higher education is not perfect and that we can do better. At the same time, we will never compromise our academic freedom and our ability to govern ourselves.

Best,
Sian Leah Beilock
President

Tax the rich, not the universities

If Yale were a person, it's $41.4B endowment would make it only the 23rd richest America. It's less than a tenth of Elon Musk's wealth, less than a sixth of Larry Ellison's.

So how come it's fine to put a wealth tax on Yale, but unworkable and economically destructive if applied to them? 🤔
Yale to Trim Budgets as Higher Endowment Tax Tops $300 Million
Yale University is cutting costs and offering retirement incentives as it prepares for higher US taxes on its endowment income and reduced federal funding.

Looks like a fun and weird read indeed! And also highly relevant, at least psychologically and perhaps also historically to the mainstreaming of conspiracy theories in the current moment

MADELEINE DEAN: The president is unhinged. He's unwell

JOHNSON: A lot of folks on your side are too

D: Oh my god, please. That performance in front of the generals?

J: I didn't see it

D: It's so dangerous! Our allies are looking elsewhere. Our enemies are laughing. You have a POTUS who's unwell.

Time to update your Palaeolithic palettes... 🔵

Very proud to share our new research on the OLDEST use of blue pigment! We identified traces of azurite - a vibrant blue mineral - on a stone object around 14-13,000 years old. Why is this so exciting? 👇🏺

doi.org/10.15184/aqy...
Close-up image of a sand coloured stone, with a diagonal crack. The sand rock has a textured surface, and small spots of blue can be seen towards the centre of the stone. The background is grey. Microscopic photo of the blue spots, that are irregular in shape and size and positioned diagonally across the image. The rest of the photo shows the rough sand coloured texture of the stone.
