'Minecraft's territory: Alberta's oil sands, settler knowledge infrastructure & digital geographies' by @jeremyjschmidt.bsky.social

This paper traces how the data used for a Minecraft extension are tied to broader extractive networks of knowledge production.

This.

No TT/non-TT/VAP job will be offered to an int'l candidate, since it requires an H1-B until the green card is issued.

This process takes at least a couple of years.

A highly controversial new law in Turkey allows mining in olive groves, requiring tree transplantation.

My new open-access article in @politicalgeography.bsky.social explores the making of "movable nature"— salvage work that moves nature out of the way of infrastructure and extraction projects.

This article critically examines environmental salvage projects undertaken in northeastern Turkey by focusing on political and technoscientific actors…

Some food for thought: if you're reviewing a book & it has good, useful maps, say so in the review! And name the mapmaker if you can.

Often, folks writing books don't know where to go for good maps. Making mention of them in your review helps everyone.

'Many of the living worlds in the ice and snow are not visible to the human eye. “You don’t expect a living organism on the ice,” Bamert says. But there is a rich ice-loving biotic community and surprising biodiversity that thrives in this frozen landscape.'

Great start for @sophiasgaler.bsky.social 's 'Universities Challenged' with its 'Tuition Impossible' episode. A primer for the uninitiated on university finance and economic impacts.

Hoping research too gets attention in the next episode, when culture wars are under view. Well worth listening to.

Have you ever wondered what goes into making a map, or though about how maps wind up in the books you love?

I draw maps for living, and every week I write about how they come into being. The posts are free and available for anyone to read. So come give them a read!

Even under much-hated EU farming rules, farmers had to keep a 2-metre buffer between their fields and rivers. Post-Brexit farmers may try to increase income by ploughing up to river edge

More than 400km2 of riverside habitat may have been lost

One consequence of the U.K. universities crisis I discussed with friends at the RGS-IBG conference is a kind of forced interdisciplinary in organisational form - forced mergers between departments, newly named schools etc. A post-disciplinarity far from the promise of interdisciplinarity

NEW STUDY: How much CO2 can we safely store in geological formations?

In a new @nature.com study, we cross-check established academic and industry estimates with various risk factors.

We find a prudent geological CO2 storage limit that is about 10x smaller. /1
