in theory, they are meant to be broadsheets targeted more or less to the same readership/demographics

A bit niche, I know, but I'm always amazed by how different the online cover pages of @theguardian.com and La Repubblica can be. The Italians must be obsessed with crime news (considering the number of murder stories covered per day).

Italy's largest union, with over 5.5 million workers, has called a general strike for Friday in solidarity with the Global Sumud Flotilla.

And smaller Italian unions have said they will join CGIL's general strike.

Exhausted by the avalanche of soundbites from #Labour dehumanising refugees and conflating asylum with ‘illegal migration’—a sign of a leadership that has lost any moral compass (assuming, generously, it ever had one).

Rather than building cohesion, such insecurity risks producing the opposite: disenfranchisement among those left in limbo, and heightened suspicion among the wider public, who are encouraged to believe that migrants must continually prove themselves.

Some may even be “barred from indefinite leave to remain entirely”. This would create a class of residents allowed to remain (tolerated) but never able to settle or feel secure.

Who loses out?
👉 Parents with caring duties
👉 People in insecure jobs
👉 Migrants already working long hours in essential roles
All face prolonged insecurity — bad for families, bad for cohesion.

In the piece for @theconversation.com I argue that settlement used to recognise residence, contribution & community ties. Now it’s recast as a prize for those who can continually prove their “moral worth”.

1/ There’s quite a lot of misunderstanding by good journalists about how right to work checks operate. It’s not illegal to work without having provided proof of your right, as James goes on to say later in the thread. And employers are not under a legal duty to conduct checks: ID is not mandatory.

Not sure day one of the latest ID card rollout went very well at all, not least because the government couldn’t answer the absolute core question about why they’re being introduced.

The case is that digital ID will be required for anyone to get work. The problem is ID is already mandatory. 🧵

If you ( a transactionalist rogue dealer) were trying to force Denmark to negotiate on Greenland, would you perhaps consider showing them with the help of 'professional actors' how weak their airdefense is without your military support?
