I'm not sure I understand why you do this, but it sounds super cool and I'm glad you're doing it

A student wrote about our class material, “I’m left with questions that don’t have easy answers, but I’m grateful for the discomfort, because it means I’m growing.” I am undone.

Record warm ocean temperatures continued in September across the North Pacific Ocean, with a number of consequential impacts (including on downstream weather patterns).

This graph shows the average for a band across the midlatitudes for every September from 1854-2025 using @noaa.gov ERSSTv5 data.
Green line graph time series of average sea surface temperature anomalies for each September from 1850 through 2025 for only the midlatitude region of the North Pacific Ocean. There is large interannual variability, but an overall long-term increasing trend. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1981-2010 baseline. 2025 is a record high.

So this is pretty amazing - yesterday EarthCARE sampled Hurricane Humberto straight across the eye! The eye of a tropical cyclone is small so a direct hit is rare: this is the first time EarthCARE has hit one after over a year in orbit! (Showing here also VIIRS on NOAA-20 for context.)

George Herriman is arguably one of the first major black artists in comics.

And the only reason for that is because NO ONE KNEW HE WAS BLACK.

He was light skinned enough to be white passing & hid that fact into old age so that he WOULD be able to continue drawing largely due to rampant racism.

The Amphora of Great Intelligence (AGI)

#webcomic #krita #miniFantasyTheater
A comic strip in four panels:

1. A bird's-eye view of a giant amphora the size of a building with closed eyes and a closed mouth engraved on it. Using scaffolding, a community of wizards climbed up and are throwing all their books into it, to fill its content.
> Wizards: All our grimoires for the Amphora of Great Intelligence!

2. A ground level view at the bottom of the giant amphora. This time, the wizards bring tree trunks, cut down nearby trees, and throw them into a large fire to boil the giant amphora.
> Wizards: All our forests for the Amphora of Great Intelligence!

3. A gathering of all the wizards below the imposing amphora which has now opened its glowing eyes and mouth slightly. The crowd of wizards at its feet applauds:
> Wizards: Amphora of Great Intelligence, our world is dying, share your knowledge with us!

4. Same shot, as the amphora responds with joyful and amused eyes. The wizards are confused by the answer...
> Artificial Intelligence: According to geologists, you should eat at least one small rock per day.
> Wizards: ... ... ...

Great piece from Nadir Jeevanjee. As a meteorologist I of course love it when forecasts prove correct but as a citizen I would have preferred it if climate change had been prevented on the basis of the forecasts

nice article from Nadir Jeevanjee (is he on bluesky?) about predictions climate models got right. successful predictions are the gold standard of science.

5 forecasts early climate models got right – the evidence is all around you

From rising global temperatures to the fast-warming Arctic, early climate models predicted the changes half a century ago.
