I wrote a little about some of the little details you might have missed in this video and why it hit me so hard as a trans person this morning:

Was too busy with midterms and the car fiasco to mark the occasion (yet) but this week is nine years sober. I may try to go get cupcakes today.

as someone who worked at the CDC, the way they’ve targeted these illegal firings are pretty much what i would do to inflict maximum damage to what remains of our nation’s federal public health infrastructure. a hostile takeover of the agency
adamkeiper.com
You would not fire these people—including the staff of the hugely, HUGELY important 'Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report'—if you cared at all about public health, if you wanted people to live.

And you would not let your thuggish henchmen fire people like this if you were a responsible president.

Breaking my social media fast to tell you that the Oregon Humane Society has slashed adoption fees 50% this weekend to offset an intake surge in the aftermath of an animal hoarding raid. Go adopt a new bestie like Miles (link below).

The Very Large Array, part of The National Radio Astronomy Observatory, was formally dedicated #OTD in 1980.

It was renamed the "Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array" in 2012. Happy 45th birthday, VLA! 🧪 🔭 📡
An image from the movie “Contact” shows Jodie Foster’s character listening to headphones in front of a line of VLA radio dishes that stretch off towards the horizon. One of the dishes is my shaggy golden doodle Linus, wearing a post-surgery cone around his head.

Romantic lead in a thriller could be fun, too.

I would love to see him as a normal dad character dealing with weird drama. Not a seasoned hunter, just a decent communicator.

Printing presses kept their letters in cases.

Capital letters went in the upper case.
Smaller letters went in the lower case.

This is why we say ‘UPPER CASE’ and ‘lower case.’

Ok, but what did we call them before the invention of the printing press?

MAJUSCULE and minuscule.

Since Link is banned, his mutual aid Fridays have gone with him. This was one of the most altruistic things I’ve seen anyone on this site do.

In light of this, I’m gonna try to fill the gap.

Drop your mutual aid requests under this thread and I will repost them for as long as I can.

I've got a weather communication story to tell about #HurricaneMichael.

Probably the most frustrating job of safety communication that I have ever faced, and probably one that echoes some experience other meteorologists have had.

Seven years ago today, Hurricane Michael continued to intensify as it headed north toward the coast. It made landfall near Mexico Beach FL with 160mph peak sustained winds, making it the 1st Category 5 landfall in the FL panhandle and only the 4th in U.S. history.

Life hack: Keep little bits of origami paper in your wallet so when you’re waiting around in a lobby or restaurant, instead of scrolling your phone, you can fold up a little guy to leave behind and make someones day slightly brighter~
The only three origami animals i know how to make so far: a dinosaur, a crane, and a fox.

I wrote a 14 page term paper overnight (not including my refs section), partially in a language I don't speak with any meaningful fluency, while citing information from three legal systems. I also fainted the same morning I turned it in.

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.
wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.
You people couldn't hang with real slackers.

#MSH45 | Richard Lasher
You've been at a job long enough to know a decent colleague to chat with.

The more you get to know them, the more they share. What's fact or fiction? You don't know, but you listen.

Then there's one story that's so over the top—a bona fide lie. But then, a photo appears.
A red Ford Pinto hatchback angles across a narrow gravel forest service road, a blue enduro motorcycle on a rear hitch carrier. Tall firs frame the view. Beyond them, a towering ash cloud from a pyroclastic density flow billows skyward. Photo by Richard Kent Lasher, May 18, 1980.

We're pretty much done answering questions for the day - Thank you to all who participated and the experts who joined from other Washington Agencies!! 👏

Even if you didn't get to ask a question - pop in to see if that earthquake or tsunami question has already been answered by experts! 👇

You promise a recipe and do a multi day thread, ala the recipe posts that take 20 minutes to read, only the preamble is 20 days.
