just want to be clear that if Trump wins, the only accurate answer to "why did Harris lose?" will not be found in a thousand thinkpieces on "if only she'd announced more policy".

the accurate answer will be "cos American politics and American society are irredeemable fucked".

what's largely forgotten in the gauzy hagiography of the civil rights movement is that they were not a "spontaneous mass movement." many of their most famous actions were small, tactical moves made to *advance their narrative* in the public sphere.

Remember, decent people like us were traumatized seeing infants and children in cages forced to appear in court alone while separated from their parents.

America voted for a second, more violent and inhumane term.

America voted for this.

Stop pretending ICE just happened out of thin air.

Exactly this. Black soldiers experience being treated like heroes and fully valued human beings in Europe only to return to American institutional racism of Jim Crow was one of the bigger fulcrums of the Civil Rights era.

Heaven forbid they consider the role that Black soldiers fighting in WWII, being lauded as heroes in France, and then returning home to the segregated south played in the civil rights movement

Some Americans think making America weaker, poorer, more chaotic, less reliable, with fewer friends, worse relationships with democracies, and damaging international institutions America set up and benefited from is good.

Not sarcasm. I think they’re very wrong, but they’re getting what they want.

On NYT Home Page there's a Douthat column w/the headline "Trump's Foreign Policy is Succeeding. He Should Apply It's Lessons at Home." On what planet? Betraying our allies. Blowing up the global trading system. Embracing autocrats. Pulling back support for Ukraine. Helping to support Gaza slaughter.

About a month ago, the Trump administration got rid of the de minimis exemption, whereby packages valued under $800 could slide in without import duties. Now there's a backlog as the government can't process all of this paperwork, leading to UPS just destroying packages
Business Insider headline reads: UPS is telling customers that their packages coming to the US are marked for destruction.

Benjamin Netanyahu spent DECADES saying only he could keep Israel safe from Hamas. He consistently rebuffed efforts for peace because he said it would empower Iran or make Israel less safe. Then under his watch, Israel saw the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

One of my Opinions is that anyone making a defense from ignorance on behalf of the general public/some subset thereof (i.e. "people only believe [thing] because they don't know better") should be required to estimate the approximate level of information at which the defense will dissipate.

Yes but what is covered by Federal taxes— that is how they can decide what gets covered, and why abortion isn’t. A combo of private and public options is less vulnerable

"Oh, but if we just 'voted harder', it would have worked, right?!"

Yes, yes it would have. That's literally how democracy f***ing works, and the reason the GOP is even in the position to subvert democracy the way they are is because they voted harder when lefter-than-thous refused and abstained.

Do y'all understand why so many of us tried desperately to avoid Trump coming back into power?

Do y'all understand why "lol just Strongly Worded Letters" puts people into a cynical mindset that refuses to understand how political power in the US works?

We just *can't stop being contrarian*.

So many of y'all hope and pray that some mythical figure will save you from yourselves and save you from our collective national decision to elevate fascists into positions of power...

...but that's not how any of this has ever worked.

We have to save ourselves.

We have to choose it *constantly*.

*That's* why "oh so I have to vote like my life depends on it *every time*????" takes drove us all utterly mad over the last decade.

YES. YES YOU DO.

Because if you don't take democracy seriously, if you shrug your shoulders and go "well, how much worse could it be?"...

...you'll soon find out.

When someone online screams that Someone Needs To Do Something, you're seeing someone abdicate their civic responsibility within a democracy, desperately hoping some counter-force will solve their problems for them.

It's our responsibility to reject that.

It's *our* responsibility to Do Something.

Negative

For starters as a logical matter there is no universe in which this meets the intended purpose of reprogramming language

But as a legal matter you've got to have a valid appropriation to transfer the monies into

Congress appropriates some things on a multi-year basis and others annual
egojunk.bsky.social
The DoD is allowed to transfer this money per statute apparently (though this is outside of my area). The CR in March upped it to 8 billion.
Of course it has. It always does. Sec 8005 of DOD Appropriations, for starters… That one provision now allows for $8b in transfers, per March’s full year CR:

This is why democracy has no chance of returning to America.

Will fucking Bunch, of all people, is out here pushing this obscene fucking garbage that "Democrats are just like Republicans."

The Republicans are killing millions of people, but Will Bunch is going with "both parties are the same."

This is something a lot of white people don't get about segregation...the GI bill did not apply to anyone not white until legislation passed for it much later.

My Grandfather fought in WW2. While the GI Bill lifted an entire generation of White vets, he was unable to obtain a GI Home Loan or a college education. Racial discrimination was legal in banking and education...and there weren't enough Black colleges to serve the demand. Reparations are due

For those not fluent in Catholic: refusing the Monstrance is not denying prisoners the Eucharist, it is refusing Christ himself, since Christ is present in the Monstrance.
