imagine laying off a politics reporter based in portland oregon in the year 2025
2. Rolling Stone is owned by a large media conglomerate, which is ending remote work across its brands.

My home is Portland, Oregon, ~1,000 miles from the nearest office, so this marks the end of the line for me at RS.

The BBC are accidentally running the subtitles to Mrs Marple over the Mercury Prize, and it’s rather wonderful. A few of lines could plausibly have been written by Jarvis.

Wow. Sidney Reid, the DC woman just found not guilty of assaulting an FBI agent, issues a withering and gutsy statement on Trump through her attorneys.

"I feel sorry for the prosecutors really, who must be burdened by Trump's irrational and unfounded hatred for his fellow man."

It's a must-read:

remember the brief period where democrats were responding to shit like this by saying "that's weird. these people are weird. why are you worried about the sperm of teenagers" and it worked really well so they immediately stopped doing it
RFK Jr: "Today the average teenager in this country has 50% of the sperm count, 50% of the testosterone of a 65 year old man. Our girls are hitting puberty 6 years early ... our parents aren't having children."

Mamdani is in NYT because he's a national story. You can't expect a reporters from a national paper like the New York Times to have studied the history of other mayors leading a small, little noticed town like New York City.

to be fair, they lost me when they moved it from a direct sequel to Legacy and I forgot they were even making it and then when the marketting hit it was heavy on Leto which isn't really a selling point

It turns out that racial profiling in the real world doesn’t work the way it does in Brett Kavanaugh’s imagination.
Gonna kill Tron as an IP for a while rather than take the learnings from so called superhero fatigue and realise IP isn't all you need film makers who are passionate in the stories they are telling

Tron (the original movie) epitomizes the thing where a decent mid-list film required a budget and attendant expectations it was never going to fulfill.

Honestly that’s the story of the “Class of 1982” in general.

Blade Runner, Dark Crystal, The Thing..

very funny that JD Vance has so little to do with his time that he goes on podcasts to defend 30-year-old men for saying how much they love Hitler
JD Vance dismisses Young Republicans who in a group chat said "I love Hitler" and joked about slavery and rape as "a bunch of kids" who "told stupid jokes" and adds that "most of the stupid things I did when I was a teenager and young adult, they're not on the internet."

…and that’s problematic as a discourse because it negates any theory of change. If you can’t articulate that things are getting worse, you can’t strategize about how to make them better.
there’s a subset of people who, if you point out something bad happening now, will basically reply “it was always like this and anyone who disagrees is just privileged.” it parades as savvy but nine times out of ten it’s just an ahistorical oversimplification.
"they've always been like this" is always a tempting savvy take but it is just not true that Republican staffers were 100 percent open Nazis back in 2004, or hell even 2014. they just weren't

please support my "Jared Leto for Snape" fan petition
I love Tron and am a real big fan of Tron Legacy and have no interest in Ares at all and Leto is a big part of that, though also the marketing and everything has been bad.

I think the issue is that Tron has been used as just an IP disney has in this IP driven age which is bullshit.

It's unsurprising but so funny that the lesson they're taking here is "Tron" is the problem, and not that everyone fucking hates Jared Leto
there are times where I wonder if people aren't factoring Trump's history at not paying folks he hires into some of the things his government says it'll do.
Uhhhh, given that the government is shut down and the yearly appropriations have expired, does anyone know where the funds for the Argentina bailout are coming from?

The novelisation is a missed opportunity and a lost art form, poached from us by capitalists.

We still know the stories of Robin Hood and King Arthur because of novelisations. Peter Pan & Hitchhiker were novelisations. They should be a thing all writers can enjoy doing, knowing it's a real art form

Neurologically speaking, there's no such thing as 'useless' subjects or 'rip-off' degrees

Insisting we should only teach useful subjects is like saying science should only do research that gives positive results

If you honestly believe that's how anything works, *your* education was the wasted one

Nobody ever wants to talk about or admit this but it happened.
Taking in refugees isn't just a nice thing we do — we have a legal obligation. The 1951 Refugee Convention came about specifically because countries like the US refused entry to Jews who were trying to escape Germany, because the world didn't ever want that to happen again.
"boys will be boys" rhetoric always fails to acknowledge that by "boys" we're talking about the worst human beings ever. It's just a matter of being concise that we say boys and not "terrible people will be terrible people"
last i checked these young republicans were like 25 years old. but this is a classic case of infantilization to diminish the significance of the offense. www.yahoo.com/news/article...
