#mapoli Polling results here are case-in-point why propositions should be abolished. tl;dr: we'll destroy state budget by slashing income taxes by 20%, destroy housing w/strictest rent control ever tried, & spit on our founder's by suborning the leg to the exec www.bostonglobe.com/2025/11/25/m...
New Suffolk/Globe poll finds Mass. voters are eager for change in rent control, income tax, and more - The Boston Globe
The survey found a majority of voters would support at least five different initiatives proposed for the 2026 ballot.

To defend MattY *just a little*, post-election his advice to Labour was essentially zoning reform to make it much easier to build housing, especially in and around London. That is a very non-popularist position.

Every time I crack open a Sam Adams or a can of baked beans I spend at least 15 minutes thinking about the women who were accused of witchcraft.

The best rule-of-thumb I know of for estimating how much income goes to a particular group is from Piketty et al: the bottom 50% of income distribution get ~10%, next 40% get 40%, top 10% take in 1/2 of all income.

Not to pick on this person bc this is a common belief, but top American income tax rates and capital gains are higher than most European nations. The big difference is most European nations have ~4x our rate of consumption (sales, excise) taxes. How about a national 20% VAT & $2.00 gas taxes per gal
The US is unfortunately a country that prioritizes individuals hoarding money over comfort and security for everyone else. Thanks, Reagan.

FWIW, RUMINT, but pretty reliable:

1. Vance key to US embrace of Russia plan on Ukraine, Rubio (and even Trump) out of the loop.

2. Vance-Rubio relations “awful.”

3. Rubio told the senators exactly what they said he told them.

4. Hegseth paranoid he’ll be shoved out, Driscoll will replace him.

Our salvation will be the fact that, try as our government might, our government can’t overcome capitalist forces and the fact that solar, wind, and batteries are cheaper than fossil fuels (I am bullish on our ability to exploit geothermal power thanks to our petroleum expertise)

Well, I mean I subscribe to the “part of the ISI (Pakistani Intelligence) condoned Bin Laden living in Abbottabad and held that knowledge as a potential bargaining chip with us”

This is great news, but man, I miss when industry built in cities in multistory factories rather than sprawling over hundreds of greenfield acres.
First Solar just opened a $1.1 billion integrated solar PV manufacturing plant in Louisiana capable of producing 3.5 gigawatts of panels each year. The plant will employ >700 people electrek.co/2025/11/21/f... 🔌💡

When I lived in Seattle I had friends (with real jobs & weren’t grad students) who regularly ate at Canlis, THE Seattle restaurant since the 1950s. I went there as a treat for a successful defense, but my regular haunts were pho and happy hours. People can spend their money as they please.

Jobs brain is so ingrained in the American psyche that we need a full lobotomy at this point. I unironically think public sector needs to adopt some business thinking - what is our product, how do we meet customer demands, how do we do that as efficiently as possible, etc

I think all the time how Biden and the IRA kicked off a huge wave of factory investment and CapEx in EVs, solar, wind, batteries, chips, etc. all of the physical things. Trump and the GOP killed it and all that’s left is a house of cards of data centers.
