Thread. 🧵
I'm going to do a little thread on how the money from books works for traditionally published authors because people have questions, and this is always useful info to share IMO. First, a big disclaimer that every contract is different, and there are a million factors that can change things. 1/

If private industry providing essential infrastructure, products, or services cannot survive financially, that’s a utility that probably shoulda been public all along.

(If it isn’t essential, why not let it implode?)
No bailouts. The US should extort these companies when the crash happens so they get minimal compensation in return for nationalizing the entire panopticon industry and then destroying it once harvested for socially useful parts. It won’t happen but it should
when its definitely not a hostage situation

Why do I have long covid and these assholes are fine
The CDC has turned off its vaccine search tool.

The vaccines.gov site now gives an error when you enter a valid zip code.

They also removed text saying “Vaccines can help you stay healthy” and added a banner saying the site is being updated.

Scientists: have you been the target of an online harassment campaign, doxxing, or weaponized FOIA requests? I'd like to talk to you about steps you had to take to protect your digital security for an upcoming Nature story. (You can be anonymous if necessary.)

RTs appreciated.

It's axiomatic! You have to hold them by the head!

In pre-modern England, the expression, "Holding an eel by the tail" meant that you were doing something the wrong way. Like...did you just buy a cyber truck so that you could look cool and pick up women? You, sir, are holding an eel by the tail.
If you ever wonder why people say "slippery as an eel" I can confirm that one time we had to hold an eel for a vet to do a blood draw and that eel ended up on the floor 47 times out of 48 attempts

I'm thinking about how it now seems clear this particular fascist moment will end, this particular movement will fall, but I'm thinking about all the forms of horrible harm that will be locked-in forever and go uncommented on. I am thinking about this because KOSA has been reintroduced in the House.

grease floats.

when it flows in sewage and into our plants, it thickens as temps fall, separating in our settling tanks.

the churning water forms grease globs that build like snowballs, and operators remove them so they don’t clog the process.

listen. don’t pour grease down your drains.

Here we are on the other biggest weekend of the year for many indie bookstores with a reminder that Amazon’s goal this week is that you never step foot in a physical store or even make it as far as the website of your local indie.
Indie Bookstore Day is the biggest day of the year for independent bookstores in North America outside of the holidays. Amazon would rather loss lead so hard they make zero profit on this event than see you get in the habit of visiting your local indie. Don’t fall for it.
it blows that Am*zon is doing a big book sale on Indie Bookstore Day. they’re doing it on purpose to try to squash indie bookstores and I hope whoever came up with that idea stubs their pinky toe every day forever

BREAKING: This is huge news, the EU's equivalent of the 🇺🇸Supreme Court's 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges ruling.

🇪🇺Court of Justice just ruled all 🇪🇺countries must recognise same-sex marriages granted in other member states.

This effectively legalises gay marriage across 🇪🇺

Yes, HID headlights are very bright but the bigger problem is the proliferation of gargantuan vehicles with 5’+ hood heights so that if you’re driving a normal sized car their headlights are at your eye level rather than seat level like they’re supposed to be.

FUCKIN FINALLY

Massholes, be sure to call Warren and Markey tomorrow to tell them we want more of this
Wow — Senators Van Hollen, Smith, Murphy, Sanders, Warren, Markey, Merkley, Heinrich have created an official internal "Fight Club."

They're challenging Schumer & Gillibrand's leadership, arguing the party is using an old, corporate-friendly playbook insufficient to take on Trump or win elections.

Folks forget that the ACA *was* the compromise position. It was never full on heal reform so much as health insurance reform, but it was what the political reality of the time permitted.

That said, Medicare for all, and let the shareholders answer to God.

Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
One of the bragging rights that the US ed system had in the 20th century is that we didn't have education tracks. Essentially, any kid could go to a CC or state school & major in whatever they wanted to (obviously an oversimplification). I fear this aspect of the American dream is dying.
