I write stuff and I read stuff, not always in that order.

Some concerns about the way things are currently are going.

lol on this website looking at hotel prices and the rooms are so expensive that they’ve removed the $ and just have a tiny usd after the number like they can trick us into forgetting what money is

In other news my father’s Christmas list consists of two items:

1. $18 t-shirt with the outline of some pine trees

2. Rubber duck that’s dressed like a pirate

Man knows what he’s about

Keep getting bullied by Hamnet bc in theory I’d see it but every time I see Anne Hathaway’s loose uncovered hair I lose my mind. How does she keep it clean?? Why does she want to provoke scandal??

I would let it go if I could but I’m physically incapable. Why do they always do this?!

"All is lost" narratives are popular because people generally do not want to take action. Taking action is tiring so if all is lost, you are off the hook. Nothing is more seductive than not having to do anything.

Door to my room is closed at night bc I’m right off the busy hallway.

Except that my roommates cat got scared and the place beneath my bed is her safe place so now I can’t sleep bc the door is open but I can’t close the door bc then she’ll be trapped.

Anyway we’re doing great.

Not my Protestant ass having to watch Wake Up Dead Man a second time to fully grasp the symbolism of the empty silhouette where the crucifix should be. A hollow absence that the congregation violently defends, insisting that the absence of the church is the church itself, making change unthinkable.p

They keep promising snow and it keeps not happening and the kids are PISSED. Not that I blame them.

Anyway Republican gerrymandering plans seem like a great strategy because there’s clearly a lot of Republican voters to spread around.

An easy way to explain luddites:

Textile manufacturers brought in machines that could do in an hour what would have taken 12 hours by hand.

And then, tried to keep paying the now 12x more productive workers the same wages as before.

That's it, that was the problem luddites had. Not complex.

Solid piece on a series I love that continues to do thoughtful work in a genre that is often blatant copaganda.

Wake Up Dead Man in particular asks what grace and justice look like from both a religious and secular PoV. Those questions are beautifully handled and this essay talks about it well.
Don’t read this if you haven’t watched the new Knives Out movie but I wrote about how the series only works because Blanc doesn’t treat the mysteries like a game but is always protecting the most vulnerable individual in the case

There’s several tensions at work in the new Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man — religious belief vs nonbelief / atheism, innocence vs guilt, love vs hate, what a community looks like, what is the tru...

Students starting college now were in middle school when COVID hit & a lot of schools started passing kids for no work at all. That + smartphones + chromebooks means even before AI kids spent a ton of time just interfacing with addictive tech & any kind of standards are treated by admin as cruelty.
It's like they just keep...forgetting? Or they read the instructions and completely disregard them, even knowing that they can't pass the assignment without demonstrating really clear skills (citing material, writing on a course text, etc.). They just...don't do it. And don't seem to care.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Shocked and horrified to find out that I am apparently on the more normative side of Star Wars discourse and the more controversial side of sleeping on the floor discourse. Was not prepared for this, honestly.

Currently working really hard on these intertextual pieces in a story while simultaneously wondering if I should remove all the intertextual elements of the story.

My Star Wars hot take for the day is that earlier I was walking with a 6th grader and we passed a porg plushie and I said “Porg!” and she did NOT know what that was. Was genuinely so confused, I had to try and explain it for like two minutes and then ultimately gave up.
