Since AI slop is again all over Scientific Reports, a thread on the economics of grey-zone publishing.

Why does slop keep getting published? What does it mean for science? How can we stop this?

Socialism is what they called public power.

Socialism is what they called social security.

Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations.

Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people.

This team are searching for new "Asgard archaea" to sequence.

Let's talk about why these bacteria-like organisms are so fascinating, why they're named for Norse mythology, and why looking at them is unlocking a better understanding of our own genomes.

Once considered a type of oddball bacteria🦠...

So, I have read articles written by people who claim that the entire concept of modern medicine is bad, because "artificially" saving people's lives has put a stop to human evolution by letting genetically inferior people breed. Great that those folks are in charge of the CDC now.
EXCLUSIVE: CDC to end all monkey studies. Decision handed down by recent college grad and former DOGE employee who is now deputy chief of staff at the agency. Animals were being used in studies of HIV prevention. Some may be euthanized. My latest for @science.org
Exclusive: CDC to end all monkey research
Studies related to HIV and other infectious diseases will be phased out, sources say; fate of the agency's animals remains unclear

I wanted to share probably the most important sermon I’ve given and it’s while I’m being arrested. It’s torture pure and simple what happens at #Broadview. I’m ok, though I was thrown to the ground and choked with my pectoral cross. A review of the video shows I was peaceful - did I deserve this?

Vinculin is a simple adapter protein right? Wrong!

That’s been the prevailing view for the 46 years since it was discovered.

Here we provide a new paradigm and show that vinculin is a complex mechanosensor itself, containing 6 binary switch domains.

Very proud of this work that is now out on JCI describing a new #signaling pathway downstream of the #cytokine IL-6 in the #endothelium with implications in #sepsis and #shock. Short thread with a summary coming later today.
For now just enjoy that gorgeous image taken by my student Fatma Awadalla!
