i need you to promise me something:

never stop being kind. never stop pursuing the things that bring you joy. never stop being yourself. protect that light inside of you, even if it's only a flickering little flame right now.

the world is cold and cruel and scary. we need you.

between the unethicality of how data was ingested and the climate side, how the fuck anyone can justify using this is beyond me. I don’t care if you’re using it to do a little character portrait for your tabletop game or just asking questions to summarize things, stop
And it's important to mention when its NOT generating those things, even when its being used to "play around" its being powered by data centres spewing pollution often into low income neighbourhoods. There is no "playing around" with AI, its harmful. Full stop. www.bbc.com/news/article...

white people who don't value human life, loving only profit, as any other system colonialism has built to enrich and prolong itself.

Even before we hit Thiel's bizarre, anti-humanist, seemingly apocalyptic vision of its applications, there can by their nature be no *ethical* use of stolen bones.

And because I very much do not want to get into the funding cycles of NGOs and the horrors of venture capitalism and its involvement in do-good entrepreneurship, I'll say this instead:

The con is on.

And people buy into it because the sales pitch hits that core desire charitable and pro-environmental enterprises have of "This will let you do more good, faster, cheaper."

I've worked on stuff from environmentalists and ethicists who don't know genAI's environmental costs. 10/?

But here's the thing: I do a good amount of non-fiction editing, some in the sciences, and beyond having to inform people that genAI is not medical/scientific AI, the same lack of awareness of costs is there. And people like Sam Altman are actively cultivating do-gooding entrepreneurs in person. 9/?

And that myth is so fucking widespread, that what looks obvious to so many of us in the arts isn't broadly visible to people outside of our industries.

There's always a contingent of people who don't *care* about the harms or the theft. (Surprise, surprise, it's mostly shitty white people.) 8/?

"A.i." sucks and you shouldn't use it.
So, I moderated a local history panel last weekend. An organizer just sent me a "summary" to approve. They uploaded the audio to some AI, which fabricated an outline and "pull quotes." The quotes are fake. No one on the panel said any of that.

It had the full audio and STILL made up quotes.

Open AI now runs commercials in ChatGPT to somehow make money or risk bankruptcy. DELL admits that AI is not a selling point for customers. Most CEOs report that so far AI didn't increase their revenue or savings.

Even in New England, where we're more used to snow and winter weather, heavy accumulations of ice will shut down a city. Don't drive on it, seriously.
