“A Brief History of the Afterlife,” in the March/April issue of Asimov’s. Embarrassingly proud of this one.
Entering the Rose Reading Room can be intimidating because staff is turning a bunch of tourists away, but you just need to know the magic words: "I'm here to work."
Writing my dissertation partly in this room was one of the great experiences of my scholarly life. They kept complete standard editions of American authors against one of the walls. Also I was still smoking cigarettes at the time and would go down to Bryant Park. A++++
The Rose Reading room at the NYPL, for instance, is a place where literally anyone can have access to world class research materials— a universe of ideas— and, if they use them right, and stay at it, they can become a genius

What an amazing essay from the former chair of Africana Studies at Bowdoin. I'll share a few sections in the reply but seriously, read the whole thing. It's all insightful and beautifully written.

Maybe Don’t Talk to the New York Times About Zohran Mamdani

Mamdani's win has real lessons & implications for the vast majority of Americans - how to make life better, how to win city council elections! Not everything has to apply to people in diners in rural Ohio!

Zohran Mamdani's focus on public transportation - and on affordability in general - paid off in a big way. Lots of fascinating insights in this map (free link)

Yeah never trust an argument about how you should achieve a goal from someone who at a fundamental level does not want you to achieve your goal.
If he actually believed that then he wouldn't be complaining about it because the position of his base is that weakened unions are a good thing.

Nine months ago I put most of my hope in major institutions continuing to hold fascism in check, but had little expectation that regular people with little to no power would step up and put themselves at risk.
I had it exactly backward.
