This PSA is going out early to prospective students of U Waterloo’s Advanced Computational Physics, Winter 2026 edition.
Dear My Students: I'm begging you to hit "Restart kernel and run all cells" before declaring your code finished.

Paper day! Led by Hunter Martin, a PhD student in my group, and using UNIONS weak lensing shapes, we have measured the "anti-lensing" signal from cosmic voids.

There's dark matter in the voids!

Lensing without mass: The matter density profile in cosmic voids from UNIONS
We measure the distribution of matter contained within the emptiest regions of the Universe: cosmic voids. We use the large overlap between the Ultraviolet Near-Infrared Optical Northern Survey (UNION...

I have to admit that I still haven't fully understood how the US budget system works, but this sounds like good news.
The Senate appropriations committee has voiced its intent to ignore the request by President Donald Trump to slash the budgets of the National Science Foundation and NASA science programs. scim.ag/4nW7XWi
Senate spending panel would rescue NSF and NASA science funding
Its support for a flat budget is a sign of congressional resistance to drastic cuts Trump has proposed

For those unfamiliar with the Beaverton, think Canadian Onion.
Google and Meta search both report that Cape Breton Island has its own time zone 12 minutes ahead of mainland Nova Scotia time because they are both drawing that information from a Beaverton article I wrote in 2024

Interviewer: can you explain this gap in your resume?

Astronomer: Orbital resonances
Interviewer: can you explain this gap in your resume?

Astronomer: TESS coverage shift.
Interviewer: Can you explain this gap in your resume?

Astronomer: It’s not truly a gap—rather, dust has obscured our view of that region, but if you would provide me with a very large infrared space telescope, I’ll see what I can do.

🥳 It's paper day for the completed #ESO Kilo-Degree Survey. We end our journey with a consistent picture of #cosmology 😲
I've been co-leading KiDS for 12yrs & I'm so proud of what the team's achieved. If you're at the #Euclid meet, go to Angus Wright's talk @10am today!🔭

Double paper day! Isaac Cheng looks at mergers with weak lensing in UNIONS. There are hints of differences with control samples, but at this stage, these aren't statistically significant. Still, extreme starbursts (half of stellar mass formed) in mergers can be excluded. arxiv.org/abs/2502.00584 1/2

Paper day (last Monday). Led by Amber Hollinger, we quantify the uncertainty in the Riess et al. measurements of H0 that use our 2M++ model. Peculiar velocity corrections do indeed reduce the uncertainty in H0 to 0.3 km/s/Mpc. Looks like the H0 tension remains! arxiv.org/abs/2501.15704
Uncertainties in the Hubble Constant from Peculiar Velocities
Recent measurements of the Hubble constant using type Ia supernovae explicitly correct for their estimated peculiar velocities using the 2M++ reconstruction of the local density field. The amount of u...
