St. Joseph Creek flowing under the ice this afternoon, Maple Grove Forest Preserve.
NYT says ICE shot him in the back:

An “agent aims his own firearm at Mr. Pretti’s back and appears to fire one shot at close range… A third agent unholsters a weapon. Both agents appear to fire additional shots into Mr. Pretti as he lies motionless… At least 10 shots appear to have been fired…”

If you watch police/crime tv as a form of escapism, I’m here to say that “Karen Pirie” on BritBox is underrated. Season 2 hits hard.

Like a Waffle House index, only of cowardice

A thread of musings out of context.

Why do they all look like vampires?

I honestly thought for a moment this was a metaphor for the country somehow...

(The real story is WILD - follow the thread below)
I just woke up from a nap and somehow while I was asleep, everyone on the bus has figured out we are not going to the right place

Ooh, I will read that!

Sorry - I meant to reread the account of Shackleton’s expedition titled Endurance - survival against all odds.

Stunning.

And it reminds me to re-read the account of that expedition. It helped me finish my dissertation. Maybe will help now.
This photo was taken in 1911 using glass plate technology by Herbert Ponting who was part of Scott's Antarctic expedition,

The composition and detail are exquisite with the band of white snow/ice creating a perfect frame around the two people and the ship in the distance

Iconic imo

I need this movie
I thought this trailer was an SNL sketch, but nope! — it’s a real movie with possibly the greatest cast of 2026, and I implore you to watch the trailer 😆

Yes! Just helping parents with various things and always impressed with the nurses

I observe that nurses are fabulous people. Smart, kind, patient, badass. Grateful for them

Oh no we will miss you

Directly from the story: EPA "would no longer take health effects into account in the cost-benefit analyses necessary for clean-air regulations." Instead, "the agency would estimate only the costs to businesses of complying."

Finished teaching a new course on energy markets and the clean energy transition last month. Was a blast and have lots of thoughts for next year.

One takeaway is the value of going beyond academic journals/textbooks and incorporating media articles, podcasts, and video. Here's a few we covered... 🧵

Wow.

Your turn, Senate.
Breaking news: More than a dozen House Republicans joined every Democrat to pass a bill extending enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies for three years — the sharpest GOP break with party leadership yet.

So they ran two experiments...
