it really does make it difficult to utter those words "they didn't know any better back then", because "hey maybe we shouldn't go out here with shotguns and mow down all these birds until there are no more passenger pigeons" really is just COMMON FUCKING SENSE

there's a thread on tumblr that always gets me about pigeons, how there are so many color varieties and are so adaptable in the cities because we bred them to be that way, round little feathery friends, and we abandoned them en masse and now call them "rats with wings"

the episode of river monsters where he inadvertently hooked a goliath grouper while trying for a bull shark in florida was wild. first time i'd ever seen a "fish shaped" fish that big that wasn't a shark or sport fish. thing looked like it came out of galactus's fish tank
It's hard to grasp how large this grouper is until you see it in comparison to the ship's toilet on the left.
This appears to be an Atlantic goliath grouper or 'itajara' (Epinephelus itajara). They can reach 800 lbs (350 kg) & 8 feet long (2.5 m)
