"The democrats need to be open to people who experience hardship and the people who cause it."
Gov. @gavinnewsom says he disagrees with Mayor @zohrankmamdani about the need for a wealth tax on billionaires, which he is “adamantly against” - says Dems are a “big tent party” with both views.

I don't care if you think that AI can do some really nifty things. It's being rammed down our throats by obscenely wealthy men who are also, obviously, both dangerously right-wing and mentally unstable, and no rational society should be allowing that to happen. End of discussion.

If you support billionaires, fascist ideologues and throwing trans people and their rights under a bus all while claiming “we need a bigger tent” and only include far right and literal fascist members all so you can lose an election you’re not a serious candidate you’re a far right threat.

Last year Biden was babbling to reporters about how Netanyahu wouldn't be opposed to a "demilitarized Palestinian state". Of course, within days Netanyahu refuted this and said even this wouldn't be acceptable, but it is funny that people pretended this was some exceptional pro Palestine position.
I've always been pro-Palestine but one of the things that soured me on "two-state solution" fetishists was hearing them talk about their vision of a Palestinian state. Basically they require it to be demilitarized and clearly subordinate to Israel, which is to say - not sovereign.

I don't care if a non-disabled person accesses a disability accommodation for the same reason I don't care if a child whose parents are rich gets free lunch at school. We don't need to means test being a kind person. I have better things to do with my time than be a cop over social services.

On the other hand, I think it’s fine if “conservative activist” becomes synonymous with white supremacy because it is
Christopher Rufo is just a white supremacist, and I think it’s silly that we’re still doing news stories where he’s called a conservative activist or some other harmless sounding term.

this headline is what happens when you have no ability to talk about race: “US pauses all immigration applications from 19 non-European countries“

What a totally tortured way to say “global south” lol

US pauses all immigration applications from 19 non-European countries
The pause applies to people from 19 countries that were already subjected to a partial travel ban in June, placing further restrictions on immigration - a core feature of Trump's political platform.

All of this would have helped!!
This is a terrible story--both because of the trap that was set (either in advance or ret-conned to seize a moment) for this graduate student but also because the student's department failed her. The 1st problem is easy to see, but I want to explain the 2nd one. 1/x
btw, every "reasonable" person who's own posting stuff like "well, the prompt was unclear," or "she actually kind of did the assignment OK so maybe the TA overreacted"--you are also part of the problem! You're laundering the deliberate targeting of a TA and a blatant abrogation of academic freedom!

we are well past the point at which anyone who cannot identify bad faith like this is disqualified from commenting on it

the girl and her mother are basically screaming THIS IS A BAD FAITH ATTACK ON TRANS PEOPLE at the top of their lungs and if you can't see that you're stupid or lying
a lot of people debating the merits of that dogshit essay meanwhile the girl’s mom is retweeting demands to ban all trans people from teaching at any level. it’s forest for the trees shit

I vastly prefer this genre of posting to the people who write tragedy porn about us going to death camps because they need to quote dunk on some marginally annoying cis person.

Show some real spirit, people.
I hope Woke 2 means we get to dispense with the fear of exercising power and the glorification of being an underdog in itself. Because no, I don't want to be the underdog forever. I don't want to constantly fight the establishment. I want cultural hegemony. I want the reactionaries trembling.

When I talk about crowdsourcing bigotry, this is what I mean. The OU case is an anti-trans campaign, full-stop. Confected outrage generated by a well-funded group of elites (far-right GOP) applying pressure to other elites (university admin).

This is just my opinion, but I don't think departments need to change their strategy for reading or grading student work.

Departments need a strategy for responding to harassment and attacks.

This should never fall on the TA. Every single department should have a mechanism for dealing with this and protecting their extremely vulnerable grad students--people who are doing the labor that carries entire universities and who get paid absolute shit wages.
the actual merits of the grade are mostly beside the point, but i do think it’s worth thinking about how to insulate yourself a bit from bad faith actors if you’re a professor or TA. this M.O. (on a smaller scale) is common on the right.

Oh my God, I guess I now have to ask literally everyone if they have a police state machine before I accept a dinner invitation.
Find an alternative. Ring is helping create a dystopian surveillance state, especially now that it's incorporating AI tech and facial recognition.
remember that your ring doorbell starts using face recognition on every face it sees today :)
