So, if you ever wondered why people who understand surveillance are salty about video cameras on doorbells...

It's only a matter of time before they get co-opted into mass surveillance. And if the regime you live under changes that's you spying on your neighbours.

That reminds me: It's Tom Baker's birthday in two days so no need to panic if you see his name trending on Tuesday.

That was a public service announcement for geeks everywhere.
I keep the birthdays of old Doctor Who actors memorised so I don't panic if I see them trend on that day.

I'm a Gen X Brit who grew up swimming in American culture. Aways wanted to go on a long road-trip holiday in the USA. I'd *almost* saved up enough years ago but then we had a daughter and that was that. Since then, it's been my retirement dream. Never going to happen, is it? That country is gone.

Reading Agatha Christie's lesser work does show you how much of what counts as "fair play" in mysteries depends on the assumption of shared social context.

Just read a short story where the crucial clue was, as Miss Marple says, "Gardeners don't work on Whit Monday. Everybody knows that."

I have no greater example of the bleakness of privately tutoring History than, as I described the man-made famine in Soviet Ukraine 1932-33 which killed somewhere between 3 and 12 million people, my student pushing away her bowl and declaring “WAITROSE ALMONDS ARE THE WORST”

Welcome to new Bluesky users.

Here’s how we do things:

1. Always observe the Hambledon Protocol

2. No flisking

3. If someone tealights you, rink them without apology

4. I don’t mind them so much, but tissue-posts are generally frowned on

5. No questions

Good luck!

Yes everything is a bin fire, but I sent a very speculative email to an archive and just received a bunch of photos in return, including one that was a missing jigsaw piece for a puzzle I've been trying to solve for ages. Hug your archivists close, people - they are the BEST.
