when I was a kid, my mom would drive out to Central Avenue on Wednesdays (Westchester County knows what I’m talking about) and she would go to the comic store first. Because after that, I’d just walk around with her in any store, nose in a comic, head in the clouds

I know this the oldest, lamest possible take on Mickey Mouse, but so much of the problem Disney has had as a company with dealing with Mickey is that there’s just…not much there.

It stops sorting your inbox into folders, btw, when you turn this off. As the inbox folders predate Gemini, this is a passive-aggressive attempt to make gmail a miserable experience unless you turn AI on, not a necessity.

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."
There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

It's believed we've lost the true name for bear in Germanic languages - "bear" roughly means "brown one," a euphemism used instead of the true name because it was believed that saying their true name would summon the bear.

i expect to be pilloried for this but
this is at least partially a result of the type of very popular YA fixated on main characters who are special NOT bc of what they DO, but bc of their (surprise) heritage
these books are usually also full of “races” with strongly stereotyped fixed traits

The tech content on TikTok is honestly just so unbelievably full of stereotypes about how coding requires a special brain or whatever, or extremely gender coded stereotypes about roles. Exhausting stuff.
