AOC: I want to remind you where the real crime is. It's in the oligarchs taking $170 billion of our money from health care and food assistance and public programs and taking that and funneling it into a secret police program.

So @schumer.senate.gov is saying the @democrats.org under his leadership will do nothing but surrender us again.

While they all continue to get government funded healthcare.

I asked Schumer if Dems will tie ACA $ to 1/30 funding deadline like last time.

Doesn’t sound like it. He says “toothpaste is already out of the tube” by then.

“It’s on the Republicans that we haven't had health care done. After January 1, it's very, very hard to put it back.”

very grimly ironic that our government run by podcasters sucks at true crime

Even if an ACA funding bill somehow passes the House, there's a torpedo waiting to blow it up in the Senate: Abortion.

Republicans have made "Hyde" language a red line.

Dems say hell no.

Thune and Schumer both call this an obstacle.

Republicans demand tougher abortion restrictions to extend Obamacare funds
Democrats say that’s a nonstarter, arguing there are already limits on abortion access. The dispute could torpedo a deal, leading to higher health insurance premiums for millions.

It seems there are exactly two kinds of stories about generative AI:
1) wildly exuberant stories about what this stuff will do sometime really soon (trust us!), and
2) stories like this about how some actual use of gen AI fails fantastically

oh, wait, I forgot:
3) gen AI is pretty good at fraud
“Internal tests found that the AI was generating podcasts riddled with errors and bias, with anywhere between 68 and 84 percent of the scripts deemed unpublishable by evaluators across three rounds of testing.”
The Washington Post Deployed Its Disastrous AI-Generated Podcasts Even After Internal Tests Showed It Was Failing Miserably
Semafor reported that the Washington Post launched its controversial AI podcast feature despite knowing it was severely flawed.

I have met Susie. She could not have been more pleasant to me in person. It was also *palpably* obvious that she is Evil. I don’t mean that in a small way of she’s mean or devious, but a big one: she’d wear your skin as a suit in a nanosecond if it was chilly outside and never think of it again.
I don’t even know what to make of this level self-delusion, cognitive dissonance and moral cowardice

This is just one example, but this story is the perfect example of why mediocre white guys are against DEI and this is the “American Dream” they’re trying to preserve. This is the “western culture” they want to protect, and anti-discrimination laws and policies destroy that.

this has always been the most baffling and depressing thing about the political hellscape we have lived through in the last decade

there is nothing there at all except a rapacious, all-consuming need for praise, no humanity at all, nothing but a carnival barker's ability to work the crowd
Virginia Heffernan wrote this shortly after the 2016 election and it still holds true

one of the funnier aspects to the AI backlash is the fact that they're negatively polarizing much of the tech enthusiast demographic against them by making hobbyist PC building functionally unaffordable
Just so I'm clear on this, computer memory has tripled in price because a bunch of it that hasn't been produced yet has been ordered to populate GPUs that aren't installed in data centers that aren't built yet in order to service a demand that doesn't exist to make profits that don't happen.

Happy Hanukkah to our friends who celebrate. Rachel Posner, a rabbi’s wife in Kiel, Germany, took this photograph in 1931 -- a potent reminder that fascism must be fought in every generation, even if it's wrapped in an American flag and a red hat.

Obviously, Rob Reiner’s movies are the big things to remember him for but I keep thinking about a very funny scene from New Girl, where he’s Jess’ father and was talking to Nick about Nick’s novel. Rob Reiner kept pointing out the similarities to Twilight and it was so funny.
