Yes, European far-right parties are copying Trump, some more openly, some rewriting plans for day 1 in office.

But what really troubles me: while overwhelming parts of 🇪🇺 publics disapprove of Trump, his copiers in 🇪🇺 are still rising in the polls. Is it so hard to cognitively draw the connection?

Far-right parties in Belgium call for "antifa" bans.

The UK's Reform Party is adopting policy positions that are a “copy and paste” of Trump’s.

The American flag is a symbol for Brazil's far-right.

As Trump tears apart the US, experts worry that other countries may dismantle themselves too.
Is America contagious?
Scholars in political extremism are documenting the global spread of right-wing populism.

We really have reached the end of a civilized age in several Western societies. Wild West in front of us. A dangerous world for most of us.

I will not back down.

Trump is now calling for the arrest of elected representatives checking his power.

What else is left on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?

You would mainly work with the fabulous @bencehamrak.bsky.social & make the exciting experience of bringing several surveys into the field. Having been involved in fielding a survey before is a plus. We offer a 10-hours contract for 6 months, starting in December in best case.

🚨We are looking for a research assistant at the masters level to help us with designing & running some surveys in the MULTIREP project.

If you are based in Vienna or around, have some interest in political representation & experience with surveys, consider applying! 👇

🚨 New(ish) Publication Alert! Delighted to see my article Credit Claiming in the EU @thejop.bsky.social I explore a classic question for accountability in Europe: when and why do govs claim credit for the work of the EU and shift blame onto Brussels to avoid responsibility? doi.org/10.1086/732970

No worries, it actually is in the database. This is just German bureaucracy.

@germany.diplo.de can you advise on the above? German municipalities accept LSE doctorates without a problem, but your Vienna embassy seems in doubt!
chriswratil.bsky.social
Update: I provided 🇩🇪 embassy with a KMK document stating UK PhDs generally qualify as „Dr“ AND my 🇩🇪 last residency certificate that shows „Dr“ on it, since municipality had accepted it without a problem.

They say they cannot copy from municipality & LSE is not listed in some database they have 🤯.
chriswratil.bsky.social
My prediction became true: Just got message from 🇩🇪 embassy in Vienna that my LSE PhD cannot be put as a German „Dr“ in my passport — or, at least, they need an opinion by the German Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs.

At least, I am still some Prof in 🇦🇹 😅.

We’re in a moment now where it would be worth people taking three hours to watch Gandhi, particularly the scene of the salt march. There is value to making the brutality of your opponent so plain as day that no one can argue with it. The clarity of that brought down an empire
chriswratil.bsky.social
Yes, I am quite sure their decision is wrong. I don’t care about having the doctor in the passport, but since the form asked and I had the certificate at hand… What really triggers me is the Kafkaesk absurdity of state bureaucracy.

This evening, President Trump is ordering 400 members of the Texas National Guard for deployments to Illinois, Oregon, and other locations within the United States. No officials from the federal government called me directly to discuss or coordinate.

It appears that my employer, Dartmouth, one of the Trump 9, has said no to the compact. All the better given that our president is cited within it. But she’s saying no. Count the small victories when they come.
Office of the President
Dear Dartmouth community,

As many of you know, Dartmouth was one of nine universities asked by the White House to give feedback by Oct. 20 on a draft of its “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.”

I am deeply committed to Dartmouth’s academic mission and values and will always defend our fierce independence.

You have often heard me say that higher education is not perfect and that we can do better. At the same time, we will never compromise our academic freedom and our ability to govern ourselves.

Best,
Sian Leah Beilock
President

I think the comments under this article post are actually useful for political scientists to read, especially if you are interested in how people think about responsiveness of politicians and parties (to the median voter)👇.

It is a purely factual description now that the way 🇺🇸 politics works is that Only This President can ignore all previous laws passed by all previous Congresses & ignore all previous int’l treaties ratified by them. We can argue about what to call this regime. It’s neither a democracy nor a republic.

🚨 New preprint 🚨

Across 3 experiments (n = 3,285), we found that interacting with sycophantic (or overly agreeable) AI chatbots entrenched attitudes and led to inflated self-perceptions.

Yet, people preferred sycophantic chatbots and viewed them as unbiased!

Thanks! Yes, a functional legislature would help, but wondering how common this is for such episodes, usually the authoritarians control legislature by then. I also think the argument about boredom of authoritarianism is correct, but I still feel US civil society response is surprisingly weak.
