this is true but then leads to a question it feels insufferably elitist to even ask: is it possibly better if they don't participate? Were we better off in a world where they didn't feel they had to?

is it a different answer for visual slop vs verbal slop?
there are simply not that many people who are highly articulate, verbal, and online

most people do not establish and maintain online identities

if you do, you absolutely will stand out

AI slop is being posted largely by people who were never going to participate without it

I was and remain not a fan of legislative recall provisions, but I am not above revelling in a bit of petard-hoisting when they get used against a third of the government caucus for forcing my baby sister off her picket line
5 more UCP legislature members facing recall, bringing total to 14 | CBC News
Elections Alberta says it has approved recall petitions against five more members of Premier Danielle Smith's United Conservative Party caucus, bringing the total to 14.

I'm not an expert on British politics so please forgive me if I'm speaking out of turn, but it really feels like the entire country has just accepted that they cannot afford anything. Can't pay more judges so just have to accept, as a practical matter, that some people shouldn't get real trials.

in general, a lot of distinct flavours of "because I'm X I can express myself however suits me, and if you object in any way that might affect me, or even just ignore me, you're anti-X" going around lately

cannot stress enough that this is not how free markets or free expression can possibly work
there's this weird belief of small business owners (among others, frankly) that they are entitled to paying customers regardless of what they do or say because they're categorically Good People and the Salt Of The Earth and I simply do not get it

an underdiscussed aspect of "should MLS align economically with "world football?" is "how sustainable are the economics of world football outside twenty teams in England, plus maybe Spain and Germany?"
the economics of league football outside a few large countries keep getting worse and worse
The news that Belgian football feared: as happened in France, DAZN is pulling out of its broadcasting deal with the ProLeague with immediate effect. Should no solution be found (which appears the likeliest scenario), the league's 16th round will not be broadcast in Belgium.

deeply glad that this was on at 10PM EST on a work night so I couldn't watch, because I wanted Minnesota to win and seeing them blow these chances would have been IMMENSELY (and ironically) frustrating to watch

on top of all the other more typical ways in which I'm told it was frustrating to watch
This is called irony

Folks are dunking on this but honestly whatever you think of the man he has a point - capitalism did not create oppression, and what we had before capitalism was not freer for the majority of people.

Look up how subsistence peasantry lived, don't compare yourself to nobles or literati.
“Capitalism forces you to wake up at 7am against your body’s natural rhythms” no that’s Taylorism and if you don’t like living in a society that coordinates effort to ensure a better outcome for all then I don’t think you’ll love the alternatives

I've long been a staunch "it's OK to play American soccer." Something relatable to fans who grew up with other sports in the U.S. Eschew Real and Inter and F.C. Plural nicknames, etc. I actually like the best-of-three Round One of MLS playoffs that pinkie-waggers hate. Yo, Crew, you didn't beat FCC.
Yes. I'd long been a "Shield is the best team" guy but the past three years have really forced me to rethink that.

If Philly'd played Vancouver or Miami's schedules, do they win the Shield? No chance.
Last year they had the worst luck (schedule, fixture congestion, injury, XG differential, etc), and this year that pretty much flipped.

Do you think the unbalanced MLS schedule coupled with the unbalanced cup schedule is making the Shield...not less meaningful but maybe differently meaningful?

Internet scams are going to get worse and honestly it’s just a sad situation.

If you have billions of ppl in developing countries who don’t have opportunities to make a decent living but do have access to the internet, some are going to use that to degrade themselves + others, to all our detriment
I had a popular account with a valuable audience and my Twitter payout was $80 a month-ish, to the point where I disabled monetization instead of uploading my ID. Payouts are only material if you live in a developing country, so “guy in Nigeria posting right-wing Amerislop” has taken over the site.
Twitter pays people based on engagement (views, retweets, comments, etc). It appears that many MAGA accounts are based abroad and they use AI technology to generate low-effort rage bait.

My guess is that this will get worse as AI tech improves. For instance, fake videos of minorities doing crime.

Growing up an Edmonton Sports Fan post-Gretzky/pre-McDavid + adopting two soccer teams with even MORE (justifiably) pessimistic fandoms means that my response to this (correct, shared) view of Saturday night's Whitecaps game has mostly been a mounting sense of dread that it will all somehow go wrong
Matt, is this the most hyped MLS matchup ever? I can't think of a better matchup, on paper, in the league history. Star power, beautiful soccer, massive sold-out arena. This is peak, no?

the thing about social media I keep saying is that it makes EVERYBODY into a potential media outlet

and some of those media outlets gained reach/influence comparable to the traditional media, and gained it far faster than they gained any consciousness of the responsibility that should come with it
Nobody's saying online posters have more accountability than elected Democrats. It's that they have *some* accountability, i.e., greater than zero, which adds up over many accounts, and the problem is that accounts with large followings like Internet Hippo seem to believe it is zero.

the Blob, it turns out, may have been load-bearing
it is possibly worth wondering whether the elitist, bipartisan imperial tradition in American politics is the only thing that even made this whole system hold together, since it used to be basically impossible to elect someone in America who would just abandon the empire outright

Interestingly unsurprised by either end of this stat but I'm hoping someone wrote the list down somewhere accessible
🇦🇷 According to Opta’s Matías Conde —speaking at Olé Summit— Argentina’s Primera División saw an average of 49 minutes and 57 seconds of the ball in play, the lowest of any of the major leagues (with the MLS scoring highest with 58:04).

Not hugely surprising.

ironically if they had just done this all along the vast majority of the complaints about the calendar year schedule would have vanished
MLS schedule is out. Season opens on Feb. 21-22, takes a World Cup break from May 25-July 16, Decision Day is Nov. 7, the playoffs will take place during one month after the November international break and conclude in mid-December (don’t see an exact date listed).
