Sometimes known as "The Half-Life guy" (but not for the Half-Life games that you're probably thinking of).

In 2015 Australia wasn't too far way from its own version (precursor) of ICE.

Operation Fortitude was a joint Aust Border Force/Vic Police operation to crackdown on "antisocial behaviour" and "visa fraud".

Only a leaked press release and strong public outcry/protest prevented it.

Both of Nevada's senators--Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen--have officially come out against the DHS funding bill following the execution of Alex Pretti by ICE agents in Minneapolis this morning. This effectively ends the DHS funding bill in the Senate.

Two women trained as first responders were abducted by three ICE agents. One of the agents starts seizing. The other two don’t know what to do. The women jump into action and save the agent’s life, only to be re-handcuffed and processed.

The women say they guided agents through the emergency, later raising concerns about medical protocols, weapons safety and accountability.

Trump gets up on the stage and rambles through lies and hallucinations, describing conversations and meetings with members of the audience that they personally know didn't happen, saying things that aren't true. And everyone in the room knows it.

So, Trump's Greenland 'deal' is actually the same treaty the US already had, to begin with?
“.. Denmark would give the United States sovereignty over small pockets of Greenlandic land where the United States could build military bases, according to three senior officials ..”

Even after Trump is gone, the world will remember that he threatened to forcibly seize the territory of a peaceful democratic ally, and our institutions failed to immediately remove him. That makes US dangerously unreliable, not just one senile gangster.
His not being impeached by the end of the business day as a result of this threat is as much a problem as the threat itself. It’s not just Trump that the world has to worry about, it’s a GOP that supports him and Democrats who suck their thumbs and refuse to even discuss pushing to remove him

The lesson of history is that tyrants cannot be appeased.

Appeasement only feeds their insatiable hunger for power.

Tyrants prey on people who feel unsafe and vulnerable.

But without mass submission, a tyrant is powerless.

Remember this.

1 - make good stuff people want

2 - fire everyone who knows what they're doing even if the doors fly off your airplanes and make up some wild shit about how autocorrect is going to make it all better eventually

One thing that inhibits productive conversations about the ethics of the current state of AI is how fuzzy the terminology is (sometimes deliberately so, I suspect). We've had machine learning, neural nets, and expert systems for decades. Modern LLMs are a very specific thing with unique issues.

It’s almost as if the Morrison government was so incompetent that it’s taken three years of organised work to clean it up. Incompetent and/or corrupt.
