Agree. Just for context, the Danish subsidies to the Greenlandic society amount to about $12k per citizen per year.
Pretty sure they are underestimating how much Greenlanders don't want to be Americans. Maybe if they got $1m per person. But $10k or $100k? Prepare to be disappointed, Donnie.
Wait wait wait, while Americans have to pay hundreds of billions of dollars in new tariffs, Trump is going send over $10,000 to each person in *Greenland*?????????

This is a joke right ?

BREAKING: Denmark announces historical claim to North America 🇩🇰

Our Vikings were there in 1021 CE.
755 years before USA existed.

If we’re doing territorial grabs based on ”who was there first”... we’ll see ourselves in.

Agree, the threat of retaliation has to be both more personal to Trump - he's done in Europe - and also economic (trade deal dead, massive retaliation vs. US tech/stock market).
These comments -- "Danish prime minister says a US takeover of Greenland would mark the end of NATO" -- are getting a lot of press... but, given the politics of DC today, I doubt they form the deterrent Danish leaders hope for. DNK needs a different line of argument. www.npr.org/2026/01/06/n...

Her comments came in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's renewed call for the strategic, mineral-rich Arctic island to come under U.S. control in the aftermath of the weekend military operation ...

Imagine looking at the period after WWII and especially after the Cold War as an era of American weakness.

Unless, I suppose, if becoming the strongest, wealthiest country in history sounds bad to you because some brown people were a part oft, and you'd rather be weaker if it means being whiter.

A year ago, I went to Copenhagen to write about the political crisis sparked by Trump over Greenland. Danes told me that the US can already do whatever it wants on the island.
Their conclusion: Trump just wants the U.S. to look larger on a map

Just a reminder.

🇬🇱 is a democracy and belongs to its people.

🇬🇱 is a autonomous part of the Danish Kingdom.

🇩🇰 is one of the oldest nations 🌏, a democracy and until recently a long standing close ally of 🇺🇸.

Coming to its aid in 🇦🇫 when 🇺🇸 used article 5 in NATO, sept. 2001.

The hard part about running a dictatorship is that the past changes so quickly you have no idea what will happen yesterday.
What a difference a year makes.

other than Maduro's vice president being in charge now, it is not clear that ANYTHING has changed in Caracas

(but at least 40 Venezuelans are dead)
Word of caution. Just because Trump claims that the USA controls things in Venezuela, it does not mean that it does or is anywhere close to doing so. All Trump has done so far is remove one dictator but leave a dictatorial system in place.
Don't mistake his bluster for truth.

If Trump’s concern was drugs, he’d not have pardoned Honduras’s corrupt leader; if terrorism, he’d have gone after Iran; if world order, Russia; if preserving US power, China. If democracy, human rights or humanitarian motive, dozens of other worthy cases. What’s left is oil. And Epstein.

try to make sense of it
So fmr Honduran President Hernandez voluntarily surrendered, and was duly extradited, tried and convicted for drug trafficking, and Trump pardoned him 6w ago.

And this morning, Trump illegally attacks Venezuela and abducts its president and his wife purportedly to try them for drug trafficking.

Remarkable interpretation of US law.
Marco Rubio is reportedly saying Maduro will stand trial in US courts.

Which means it’s now the US administration’s position that US courts can hold foreign presidents, but not the US president, accountable for crimes.

I don't begrudge Vance et al seeking to prioritise Asia over Europe. I'd make same choice in their shoes. But what's happened is not a prioritisation (we see a new chimerical long war in the Americas), it's a chaotic & short-termist approach to Ukraine, and a needles diplomatic war on Euro allies.
Yet more evidence in the NYT long read on Ukraine that JD Vance, a heartbeat away from the US presidency and probable 2028 Republican presidential nominee, would be a disaster for European security. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
