“Abolish borders” is great and worth saying often, but what do you do when a large number of mobilizable Americans could actually be on board with massive changes to how immigration works in this country, because l’m not sure that’s impossible to get to from here

There’s also another aspect of this: reporters are cosmopolitan, urbane people that live in cities. Many of them have internalized the fact that people like them are not “real Americans”. So they attempt to correct for this perceived inauthenticity

The psychology that twists coverage in Trump’s favor is transparent, once you accept that psychology plays a role. They want to be perceived as neutral by their peers, and they know their peers suspect them of anti-Trump bias. So they demonstrate independence by scrutinizing Dems and praising Trump.

There were at least two ceasefires under Biden! In which more than five times as many living Israeli hostages were released in exchange for 240 Palestinians! Has everyone forgotten this?

It’s always “I‘m worried there’s not a place for old white guys like me anymore.” Oh, cool. I’m worried the government is gonna make my healthcare illegal but yeah that sounds bad I guess.

I hate profiles of conservatives who are worried that their country is changing and would welcome profiles of liberals and leftists who are afraid of same thing from the opposite direction and treated their concerns the same kind of reflexive deference

I think we really should stop using antifa and just fully say anti-fascist and get them saying they are against anti fascism. Using antifa is giving them some distance and I genuinely think some of their base don’t even know that’s what it stands for.

Going with your "can do Star Wars things" point, I think for me I'd say "the minimum competency necessary to participate in the conventions of the genre". There are styles of games where you definitely want to start at "useless but fails in interesting ways".

I feel lots of things that felt like, were billed as, self-actualization read in retrospect as canaries in the coal mine for the fraying commitments we owe to each other as members of a society.

Relatedly, I recall a lot of "the joy of canceling plans" jokes and memes from the 2010s and now folks are talking about a loneliness epidemic, and, well...

People will scoff at virtue signaling and then wonder why today’s billionaires don’t build museums, libraries, hospitals, and universities like Gilded Age ones did.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

A really striking thing about the US is how it feels like everyone is constantly trying to rip you off. You have to hold constant vigilance against scam. Absolutely corrosive to social trust and a core part of our current political problems.

This gives me hope. That Calif can get serious about climate. That young people and new immigrants to Calif might have same privileges I did. That we can make transit work. And that we transit advocates can learn from this phenomenal work by housing activists
cayimby.bsky.social
[VICTORY ALERT] Governor Newsom has signed SB 79, which will make it legal to build multi-family housing near high quality transit!

As the shutdown extends, the rhetorical utility of a 94-style Contract With America becomes significantly greater.

Democrats need something material they can point to and say, "These are the perfectly reasonable points Republicans are refusing to do their jobs for."

ah but have you considered: solar power is gay
schnorkles.bsky.social
I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone thinks its a bad idea to put massive solar factories in Nevada. Have you *been* to Nevada? It's completely inhospitable in all but a couple of places.

You can't farm there, you can't ranch there, you can't live there.

SCOOP: The Bureau of Land Management says the largest solar project in Nevada — the Esmeralda 7 mega-farm — has been canceled

The news was quietly dropped via a sudden website update with no public word from any of the companies involved or a statement from the agency

One of my favorite writer quotes of all time.
junoryleejournalism.com
David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

yeah, the debates about the ethics of gen-ai itself seem kinda secondary to the societal consequences of building a machine that makes infinite fake news. I think "do we want to live in the world this creates" is a way more straightforward question, with a much clearer answer.
