Semiotics, Assyriology, literature, writing, and border collies.

“I don’t want to be in this place I want to go to my school.”

Today, after @propublica.org published this story, the camp was raided to confiscate letters from the children.

For years, human rights advocates have been warning that mandatory online ID checks are a death sentence for activists, journalists, and ordinary people resisting authoritarian regimes, for this exact reason.

Forcibly associating online activity with your government name puts dissidents in danger.

It’s weird we never do stuff like this with other terrible decisions. Newspaper doesn’t run “I saw a half empty can of Mountain Dew left on the street and drank the rest of that mfer”, and the guy who drank the Mountain Dew is only hurting himself

Adding some personal thoughts - it's really interesting for me to see these questions about whether gender identity is no longer the right concept to be at the heart of equal rights for trans people becoming more prominent.

Personally, the concept of gender identity never did anything for me.
Fascinating new interview of Philosopher Rowan Bell by @rikiwilchins.bsky.social asks whether the concept of gender identity is outliving its usefulness, and what might come after. Food for thought.

Toronto is redeveloping the former Downsview Airport into a multi-decade urban district. Built around transit, walkability and reused infrastructure, the 370-acre site will add 30,000 homes, 70 acres of parks and a pedestrian boulevard on a former runway. buff.ly/EDXvdyg

Posted in an arthritis group that I’m part of. What the hell are we doing? The benefits of WFH are so vast, including allowing many of us with disabilities to do our best work without dealing with the administrative hassle of official accommodations.

In Ontario GPs are paid by how many patients they have, not by how many services they give, and there is a massive doctor shortage. This has led to abuses.

On reddit there's a post about my parents' PCP, who keeps moving, has been on leave for years, and has 10,000 patients in his roster
Peter Bethlenfalvy's right. Why are we wasting so much money on providing accessible healthcare when there are still so many untrained exotic dancers in Ontario?

Hilary Cass here arguing for children to be prevented from being known by a preferred name or getting a haircut in case it encourages them to continue later in life to transition.

Hilary Cass acts like gender variant children should have the transness hazed out of them.

The drunk uncle theory.

You don’t argue with the casually homophobic uncle at Thanksgiving dinner to change his mind; you argue so that the closeted cousin at the kids table knows there’s safe people and better possibilities out there
agree with this (hah) but also think a particular mistake the left made for a long time online, and still makes to an extent, is failing to understand that the person whose mind you may actually change is the one reading the argument you're having, not the one you're arguing with
The secret to engaging in social media debate is knowing you will never win anyone over. The best you can hope for is to have people who already agree with tell you you're awesome. You might great a dopamine thrill from the righteousness of your anger! Fine benefits, all. But you will never win.
