it makes no sense that it's okay to signal what sports team you like and what beer you drink and what car logo Calvin should piss on, but signaling your DEEPLY HELD VALUES is cringe

(I am aware that what the brave people of minneapolis are doing and facing is very different to me britishly going "I'm sorry Jean, I think that's nonsense" to some daily mail wanker, but both come down to giving bigots a nasty shock that you don't secretly back them despite their belief you must)

Always be the person who causes a fellow white person/cis person/het presenting person/bloke/etc etc to go "oh! ...er, well nevertheless" when they thought they'd be safe doing bigotry around you - that you'd agree & join in - and you in fact pushed back, showed them you're not in their gang.
A big part of the current right wing belief system is that everyone is actually just as bigoted as they are, and are only pretending not to be as a public performance ("virtue signalling").

They genuinely thought once they started doing open racism, everyone would join in

Time. We don't have time to be curious. Change in academia to accommodate this kind of thing takes years, many specialists, concrete use cases, piloting and evaluation, and most are just not equipped to handle this mid potato being rammed into everything any better than "please, don't, not now".
Even though I absolutely hate reading AI writing, I am getting negatively polarized by the stunning incuriosity of so much of the professoriate about the objectively strangest technology in the last hundred years

(the only thing I would add about this story is that I find it.....odd that he's painted as this guy who apparently had The Ideal Life And Family but apparently no one tried to properly help him during his AI spiral and also neither his wife nor kids speak to him anymore, even now? which: hmmm)

Here's what Shakespeare actually wrote in around 1596 about the loss of a son - in King John.
In the play, the young Prince Arthur isn't dead yet, but his mother knows she will never see him again.
For me, this is far more moving and pertinent than anything in Hamnet.

Mike Scott was my hero some 50 years ago. And I've loved, or at least liked, most of the music he put out, up until fifteen years ago. His latest stuff leaves me cold. So him going to the dark side doesn't hurt as much as it once would. Still sucks, though. Anyway: Fuck off, Mike.

I was just thinking that it turns out 5+ hours of TV might not be great for consumer morale.
Honestly, reminds me of those mad US small biz confidence numbers that swing with elections. Not sure I’ve ever seen this sort of political polarisation in UK economic data before.

in a sense this is about preserving a class divide: if people for whom hrt is a medical
necessity are allowed to exist, it’s harder to exploit a market for hrt as a boutique-healthcare-subscription product
Makes me feel insane to live in a world that's persecuting trans folk while simultaneously doing big billboards advertising gender affirming care to cis people???

you know this guy is a FOR REAL photographer because he's telling the story of his brutal, unconditional arrest by federal goons and can't help but slip in a gear review
Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.
