The majority of books published lose money and the majority of authors do not earn out their advances if they were lucky enough to get one. If you do the math on an hourly wage, writing is frankly bonkers as any kind of career.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

BREAKING: This is huge news, the EU's equivalent of the 🇺🇸Supreme Court's 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges ruling.

🇪🇺Court of Justice just ruled all 🇪🇺countries must recognise same-sex marriages granted in other member states.

This effectively legalises gay marriage across 🇪🇺

Socialism is what they called public power.

Socialism is what they called social security.

Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations.

Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people.

(1/n) Image thread about the LHA 120-N 159 (or just N159) region with #JWST NIRCam. Here the filters F300M (blue), F335M (red) and F460M (green) 🔭
I made F335M red because this is PAH, otherwise the entire image would be green.

RW 58, a Wolf-Rayet star, took 6 hours and 51 minutes of HaLRGB integration with the CHI-1-CMOS telescope. I processed it with Pixinsight, trying to bring out as many details as possible. All data and images were acquired with Telescope Live.

Excited to now share this story! Papers accepted!

Apep is an awesome system, unlike any other we know about.

Two Wolf-Rayet systems orbited by a third supergiant. As all their winds collide, they form these beautiful structures that have now been observed with #JWST and ESO's VLT.

Two new papers have used data from JWST and ESO's VLT to help uncover new details of the chaos amongst the stars: Apep

@rami.spaceaustralia.com spoke with one of the paper's lead authors @astroryan.bsky.social about this incredible system.

"Sun’s slogan was the iconic “The network is the computer“

...

Today, the idea behind this slogan – namely, that a computer without a network isn’t really a computer – is so universally true it’s difficult to register just how forward-thinking this slogan was back in 1984."
