The most important part of the Rehmet campaign (in my humble opinion as a local political scientist whose opinion nobody asked for) is that Rehmet ran as a union man.

Rehmet is a union president, and this was an unapologetically pro labor campaign.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but transphobia is and always has been a tool of fascism

You cannot earnestly fight fascism whole holding transphobic values

If you perpetuate transphobic ideas, you are enabling fascism

A transphobic liberal is just a fash bootlicker too afraid to admit it
O cool The hypothesis that the elite were trying to segrigate trans people from society purely to keep us as sex slaves was real, but only for trans women since they see trans men as undesirable for sex and want them eliminated which is EXACTLY THE POLICIES AND RHETORIC WE'RE SEEING HAPPEN RIGHT NOW

Once again here to tap the mic and say Texas is a gerrymandered, voter repressed state, not a "red" state. And every one of you celebrating the (significant) win in Tarrant County better not be the same people in my mentions saying to throw the whole South away. There are good people fighting.

This is particularly true if you had a hand in helping to make that thing happen.
we need to take a moment to celebrate when a good thing happens. it is fuel for the work.

feel the joy. take a big breath in. let yourself cry.

we will win because we've got us.

The Trumpists will continue to escalate. But in Minneapolis, we can see the limits of MAGA’s assault.

Trump’s authoritarian desires are limitless. But his ability to impose them on America is not.

My new piece for @zeit.de - and some thoughts, since it is in German (gift link):
US-Regierung: Wie der Widerstand gegen Maga eine Chance hat
Der Minneapolis-Moment offenbart die Schwächen der Trumpisten. Und er zeigt, wo der Widerstand gegen den US-Präsidenten in Zukunft erfolgreich ansetzen kann.

"where are the protests" is a reflection of how many people's sense of reality is intermediated by billionaire owned social media and billionaire owned news media, both of which have strategically suppressed cover of the scale and frequency of 2025 protests
The “Where are the protests?” lament after Trump’s inauguration was always based on a (willful) misperception. Over the past year, protests have been far more numerous, more geographically widespread, and more sustained than what we saw in 2017, for instance.

There are certain people on this site (and in the halls of congress) who think everything is a distraction instead of understanding the federal government is very big and powerful and can do lots of (evil) things at once. There are no distractions just omnibattle
Seeing some replies about how the arrests of Don Lemon and Georgia Fort are distractions, but targeting journalists is straight out of the fascism playbook. It's not to distract from other issues -- the regime wants to chill critical coverage because they know they're unpopular.

Working in government I learned that 99.99% of compliance is people thinking it’s the right thing to do or being afraid to break the law. Here, the government is threatening to prosecute masses of people for 100% lawful acts, but can only harass a teeny tiny fraction. So do it and don’t be scared!
Let me reiterate: THEY DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH GUYS TO PERSECUTE LARGE NUMBERS OF DISSENTERS. What they are doing, instead, is using fear and paranoia as a force multiplier: they don’t have to persecute us if we keep ourselves home because someone told us we can’t walk in public without being terrified.

This is going to be so crucial as other cites are targeted—not least because people need to understand that there are *so many ways to help,* and if you don’t feel equipped to do one thing you can find something else that fits your abilities better. Not everyone has to be in the streets
I keep seeing posts going "when ICE comes to MY city, we'll be out in the streets even harder" and man, I get that sentiment but I need everyone to understand that the work in Minneapolis is partly confrontational but MORE IMPORTANTLY aaallll the stuff organized in the background to help neighbors

The massive government funding package just failed badly in the Senate, 45-55.

Needed 60.

Zero Democrats voted for it.

SEVEN Republicans opposed it:

Budd
Johnson
Lee
Paul
Moody
Rick Scott
Tuberville

(John Thune switched his vote to no for procedural reasons.)

And people were already suspecting that before Alex Pretti's murder. At both my local protest immediately after Renee Good's murder, and the one I was at Saturday morning, people had signs that read, "They Will Kill Again" and "They Would Kill You Too."

ICE immediately proved them right.
Suddenly the public is not reacting to a 'single tragedy' (in their view), but rather the horrifying question of 'is ICE going to execute a citizen in public on video every two weeks for the next year? three years?'

With the repeat - and such a *quick* repeat - the event becomes a pattern.

Think of taking time away to recharge not as not doing the work, but as doing quality control for the work. You’re not going to be able to show up to do it well if you’re depleted
