I have a new book coming out Step. 23rd! Full description at the link, but my elevator pitch to my writing chat was "what if a guy time travels to the present but he sort of sucks and has to learn how to be a feminist and also he looks like Robb Stark?"

‪It's already been A Week (it's Wednesday), so clearly it's time to bring back one of my favorite things: authors, let me know about a book you either have out now or one that's up for folks to preorder, and I'll repost to boost it! 📚💜

In the case of the current ICE presence in MN, this is especially scary since a lot of younger Minnesotan Somalis (and Hmong, although they aren't as targeted right now) are natural born citizens (idk the exact numbers, but I'll hazard a guess that 50% or more of those under 25 were born here)
Add to this that HSI just filed a declaration in our case challenging these policies saying they can’t trust REAL IDs as proof of status.

So showing your papers isn’t even enough to end the stop.

question for @authoremmabarry.bsky.social and anyone else who has read the Slow Horses series: is it one you need to start at #1, or can you sort of drop in anywhere? (Assume the reader has watched the TV series)

Question for those who have read the Slow Horses books: do you have to read them in order, or are they one you can pick up anywhere? (It'd be for my dad, who has watched the show)

so like, you can clearly hire a PR/law firm that runs these bots, right? it's pretty clear that happened with Johnny Depp/Amber Heard too, and it's wild that there's companies out there that offer this service and it just...goes unpunished????
takeaways:
- pushing back against lies just amplifies them :(((((
- 40% of activity from one "wave" of this attack were from bots
- “a significant user overlap between accounts pushing the Swift ‘Nazi’ narrative and those active in a separate astroturf campaign attacking Blake Lively,”

Further evidence for this point: the rage and disdain people feel for jargon and complex writing in the humanities but not in STEM is reflective of the assumption that feminine pursuits should be accessible -- secret/out-of-reach feminine things are scary not impressive
imo this is very much because our culture has decided that Humanities is For Girls and Thus Pathetically Easy Bullshit whereas STEM is For Cool Boys With Huge Dicks
i've mostly experienced it as the even worse version where everyone already innately can Do Humanities just as well as the pros, but math/sciences is difficult and requires a lot of natural talent AND learning to be able to understand it.

My husband and I listened to an audiobook of The Great Gatsby in our mid 30s while on a road trip and even though we'd both liked it as kids, it's SO different experiencing it as an adult
Perhaps there should be an FBOL reboot called ASSIGNED READING where someone picks up a book they haven't read in 20+ years and realizes they were just a snot-nosed jerk when they read it for the first time

BRIDGE TO TEREBITHIA is a different book when you're 38

American media is generally only comfortable with explicit sex if there is a commensurate amount of violence along with it (either within the sex scene or without. For example especially with historical settings, if there's a titty out you're also going to see someone's head chopped off)
I always bring up the movie Blue Valentine. It rec’d a NC-17 rating, not for the nonconsensual “finishing” or the coercive sex scene but for the cunni scene she actually enjoys & has an O from. Consensual sexual pleasure onscreen is considered pornographic 😒🥴
Why is sex-as-punishment or sex-as-suffering elevated as art, but as soon as you see characters having sex for the pure pleasure of it, it's immediately dismissed? Why do we have so many graphic depictions of sexual assault and sexual trauma and so very few of sexual fulfillment? Rly makes u think

A thing that permanently rewired my brain was the guy on twitter who had never done Christmas who decided to celebrate it with his roommates and said "Christmas is not just one day. It's a part time job you have from Thanksgiving to New Years" because goddamn it IS
Because you're an adult you fucking muppet. You gotta pay the magic forward.

i’m genuinely so convinced all of this has been a planned operation by the student and her mother (who is commenting on this publicly, and associated closely with the republican party), and big far right propaganda account going all in on it. this is designed to oust trans people from public life

One of my hottest, most controversial takes is that all DI college sports need to be entirely spun off into professional minor leagues. Stuff that's currently club/intramural level can stay.
just a reminder that *lots* of countries have universities, and (to my knowledge) none of them but the U.S. treat their universities as largely minor league sports franchises
LSU is paying its previous football coach over $50 million NOT to coach there while likely guaranteeing Kiffin something approaching double that, all while having an academic hiring freeze and budget cuts across the board. What is the purpose of a university (rhetorical)?
