TOMORROW IS THE WINTER SOLSTICE AND Y'ALL KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS. It is time for the women (defined broadly) to hunt the Year King through the woods and tear him apart with their bare hands!

One benefit of All This is that next time I have to fill out a little feedback doodad about Word popping up unnecessary "AI" "features" instead of just being a functional word processor, I will be addressing said feedback to Brandon
👍👍👍👍👍
It's cool he's so focused on user perspectives
👍👍👍👍👍
I would like to present to you the totally objective AI “architect” who believes that a professor of sociology is too biased to give an opinion on academia and AI but he is, evidently, well positioned.

This person would have done well to take more humanities.

The reason CEOs think genAI is so capable of doing everyone's jobs is because literally the only job genAI has been able to do from the get go, and will possibly ever be able to completely do, is a CEOs job.

One of the very silly talking points going around about ai is "what if you get writer's block so bad there's no way out? Shouldn't you turn to ai then instead of wasting all that effort you've already done? Do you just shelve it?"

YES, YOU JUST SHELVE IT.

FOR NOW.

YOU MAY SURPRISE YOURSELF.

As a kid I moved Vancouver -> Prairies *in winter*: could not comprehend how one survived -30. Morning DJs announced how fast your skin would freeze. Absurd! But with the right gear? It's fine.

Moved back(ish) to Vancouver Island: miserable, shivering, bedraggled, infuriated.

Damp vs. dry is REAL.
The rest of Canada laughs at us Wet Coasters when we complain about temps under 8 C. But for real, it's a different kind of cold that tears through your muscles and bones and can cause muscles to go POP simply cos you took a step

LLMs cannot do this! They can only regurgitate combinations of other people's ideas that are already out there! Yarrrrrgh
Call out the "generate ideas" lie every single time.

Absolute bullshit.

Re: you can plug "opera" or "classical music" into most posts about writing/publishing
Publishing has this 'we're not like other industries' complex about it where the culture normalises & celebrates anecdotes about having to manage 'characters'. In practice it often involves the worst paid most vulnerable staff being treated badly & feeling unable to complain.

Reminder that if you haven't read these and any word of the description sounds interesting you should read them

I would add "academia (literal)" "tea" and "soup"
I just read the first out of three, but the novellas by Malka Older, the first one is "The Mimicking of Known Success" - sapphic second chances romance, gaslamp mystery BUT set in the future on Jupiter. Really enjoyed the first one and want to read the 2nd and 3rd soon.

I enjoyed Wake Up Dead Man fine but this was the most important scene by far

One of the reasons I follow so many writers and comics artists is that they're good at articulating thoughts and you can plonk "singing opera" into almost all of said thoughts just fine
making comics has to be the hardest and dumbest goal i’ve ever set for myself

Listen, if we're going down Naomi Wolf conspiracy theory tweet territory, we're going to flush with prize posts; because RIGHT THIS MINUTE she is reposting tweets that call for a travel ban on Europe, and saying Pfizer pushed vaccines that caused a 90% miscarriage rate in women

Just wild.
I am taking the opportunity to once again remind you of the time Naomi Wolf thought Apple invented time machines run by vaccines

Front line workers deserve much better protections!
Improved air cleaning: ventilation, filtration, UV lights, free vaccines, free N95 respirators & paid sick time.
As we force more and more workers back “into the office” we guarantee more disability from long COVID with serious economic impacts!

Listen you get it
Why are you weirdos watching this if you aren’t getting paid for it? There’s football one. You have unwatched episodes of Great British Bakeoff. You haven’t done your Duolingo today. Go do that stuff instead

As someone who no longer writes the news, I can tell you how difficult it is to craft a story with scant information such as this one. I went the extra mile to work the figures and can tell you that 11.9% of this story are the words “stuck in a drain”.
Four people rescued after getting stuck in drain
Fire crews were sent to help after reports of 'several people stuck in a drain'.
